Although the relationship between nutrition and health was given importance by many of the words and actions of our Prophet in his life, it is not known to the extent it deserves in today's Islamic world.
After the studies of Harvard and California universities in the last 30-40 years, there is support all over the world. Since new studies have been conducted on the physiology of hunger and the importance of eating less, "fast-food" (starving) trends have become widespread among young people in recent years. In fact, fasting is obligatory in all religions, but the number of days and times have varied.
I would like to start my article on this subject with the hadiths of our Prophet;
- Fast and get healthy.
- Allah concealed knowledge in hunger.
- Man has never filled a container worse than his stomach. Eat one third of your stomach, drink one third, leave the rest empty for air.
- My companions will not get sick. Because they leave the table before they are full, they do not sit down at the table until they are hungry.
These are a few hadiths that come to my mind. As a physician, I want to share the physiological effects of hunger. I will explain step by step the changes that occur in our body during the state of hunger.
The first feeling of hunger occurs 4-5 hours after eating, this feeling of hunger is often a moment we call psychological hunger, it is the hunger that occurs depending on the time that occurred in Pavlov's dog experiments. , is definitely a false feeling, the real thing is that you need water, if you drink just 2 glasses of water, the feeling of hunger will go away.
WHEN DO WE FEEL REAL HUNGER?
Depending on the glycemic index of what you eat, it is 2–5. varies between hours. Doughy, sugary foods, fruit juices, acidic drinks will create a false hunger in you after 3-4 hours. Acidic drinks, which have a very high glycemic index, are the reason why if you put a 2.5 liter acidic drink in front of you, after a while you will finish it within 8-10 hours without realizing it, because it reduces your blood sugar every two hours and creates a feeling of thirst as it consumes your body's water reserves. What you are looking for is water, but since there is an acidic drink in front of you, you turn to acidic and sugary drinks again and again.
