Laparoscopy and Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopy is one of the endoscopic methods used in gynecology. It has also become popular among the public as a closed surgery. First of all, it has been frequently used in practice as a method to check whether the uterine canals are open in women who have not had a baby and to eliminate problems in the female reproductive organs. With the advancement of technology, the usage areas of laparoscopy have also expanded.

Technically, it is performed under general anesthesia. The abdomen is entered with a camera through a 1 cm incision made below the navel and the intra-abdominal organs are observed. Additionally, operations are performed using instruments from two different locations. The image is provided by inflating the abdomen with approximately 3 liters of carbon dioxide gas. Then, the abdomen is entered with 5 mm trocars from both sides and the operation is performed with the instruments inserted from there. Today, every gynecological operation performed openly can also be performed laparoscopically. The most important principle in laparoscopic surgery is that it is preferred if it can be done with the same method as in open surgery. In other words, if a surgeon can perform a procedure completely and with the same success as he can in open surgery, he should prefer laparoscopy.

Laparoscopic surgery in experienced hands is a great advantage for patients. After the laparoscopic operation performed in the morning, our patient can walk home in the evening with minimal pain. There is a chance to return to work within 3-5 days. The need for painkillers after the operation is less and blood loss is less. The scars on the abdomen are very small and indistinct.
