Vaginal discharge is a complaint that worries women at every stage of life. This complaint, which can be seen in women of all ages, is especially common in reproductive age and pregnant women. However, while some of the problems are physiological, that is, natural, some of them may be an indicator of infection and need to be treated. Gynecology and Obstetrics Specialist Op. Dr. Gönül Çimen gave information about vaginal discharge.
The vagina has a flora containing various microorganisms in a certain balance. Vaginal infection occurs when this balance is disrupted or a microorganism that is not a member of the flora is added.
Sudden onset of discharge is a sign of infection.
Transparent-white, odorless and not accompanied by itching. It is natural to have increased discharge, especially after the menstrual period. However, if the amount of discharge is sufficient to require constant use of a pad or tampon, it is excessive. Sudden onset indicates infection. Greenish, yellow color and a bad smell (pungent fish smell) or itching are also signs of infection.
Contrary to Thought, Vaginal Douche is Not a Protection Method
There are many factors that can cause vaginal infection. The most common ones we encounter are fungal, bacterial vaginosis and trichomonal vaginitis. Each of them has its own treatment, and some infections require simultaneous treatment. Although these infections can occur without any reason, they are more common in cases of vaginal douching, use of intravaginal devices, and having new or more than one sexual partner. Although vaginal douching is used as a form of protection or hygiene in women in our country, this douche does not provide protection and damages the beneficial microorganisms in the flora, disrupting the balance and causing infection. Perfumed sprays, powders, synthetic underwear, spermicide argons, gels, creams and tampons are among the factors that increase vaginitis.
What should be taken into consideration to prevent vaginitis?
- Vaginal area hygiene should be paid attention to,
- Attention should be paid to personal care and shower should be taken every other day or daily,
- Synthetic clothes that cause sweating should be avoided.
- Cotton clothes should be preferred, Pads should be changed frequently and deodorant-free pads should be used.
- Vaginal douche should not be performed and care should be taken not to use vaginal devices.
- A patient with vaginitis should adapt to the treatment and should not discontinue the treatment.
Gynecology and Obstetrics Specialist Op. Dr. Gönül Çimen “More serious infections affecting the uterus and ovaries and sexually transmitted diseases may present symptoms with vaginal discharge. Fever and abdominal pain accompanied by discharge are also serious symptoms and it is necessary to consult a doctor immediately. "Another thing that should be taken into consideration is that women should have annual examinations and smear (cervical cancer screening tests) tests whether they have complaints or not." he said.
