Headache is a complaint that occurs constantly in many people and occasionally in some, causing pain in the head, restlessness, irritability, loss of work and power.
There are many causes of headache. The main thing is to reveal the cause of the headache. The fact that the organs of the head region are very close to each other, the small size of the anatomical structures of this region and the close proximity of the nerve fibers stimulating this region to each other increase the intensity of pain felt.
In general; Hypertension, herniation of the cervical vertebrae, traffic accidents, blows to the head and neck area, traumas, visual defects, dental diseases, sinusitis, etc. Many reasons cause headaches, such as.
Today, I will tell you about the headache that occurs as a result of sinusitis.
The air-filled spaces in the facial bones are called sinuses. There are 4 pairs of sinuses, each of different sizes, and they are named after the bone they are in: These are facial (maxillary) sinus, nasal root (ethmoid) sinus, forehead (frontal) sinus and skull base (sphenoid) sinus. We call all of these four sinuses Paranasal Sinuses.
The function of the paranasal sinuses is to relieve the weight of the skull bones, help the resonance of the voice, and protect against external impacts due to their front and back walls, as well as in very hot and very cold weather. It is to protect a vital organ such as the brain. Due to the close proximity of the paranasal sinuses to the nasal mucosa, sinusitis and rhinitis (runny nose-inflammation) usually occur together and the term rhinosinusitis is used more often instead of sinusitis. The mucosa lining the paranasal sinuses and the inside of the nose serve as a protective barrier against infections. Deterioration of the vitality of the mucosal lining leads to accumulation of secretions in the sinus and sinus infection. If the infection occurring in the sinuses causes edema and closes the sinus holes that allow sinus secretions to be discharged into the nose, the secretion becomes trapped in the sinus and cannot be drained into the nose. As a result, increased pressure in the sinuses, inflammation and headache occur. Any pathology that constricts the inside of the nose or prevents nasal breathing air, affecting the drainage of the sinuses into the nose. Sinusitis can cause sinusitis. Sinusitis causes headache, runny nose, nasal congestion, bad breath, cough, earache, toothache, fever, bad smell, nasal congestion, fatigue, etc. It may cause symptoms such as: As the disease becomes chronic, sinusitis progresses with milder symptoms. Symptoms are often more frequent at night and in the early morning hours (in the supine position, due to increased edema in the mucosa and therefore decreased mucosal activity).
In diagnosis and treatment; X-ray examinations will facilitate diagnosis. In the presence of complications and when tumor formation is considered, paranasal sinus tomography is used. Ultrasound examination can be used to monitor the disease, especially in children and pregnant women.
In medical treatment; In addition to antibiotic treatment (penicelin group antibiotics), decongestant drugs are used to reduce mucosal edema and open the sinus holes. Since long-term application of decongestant drugs dropped into the nose will cause mucosal edema, they should not be used for longer than 4-5 days. In cases of fever and pain, antipyretic and mucosal edema-relieving medications will relieve patients.
Drinking plenty of fluids and bed rest are important in the treatment.
In sinusitis attacks that are resistant to drug treatment, a surgical approach will be useful. Correcting the obstruction and clearing the pathologies forms the basis of surgery.
As a result of untreated sinus diseases, inflammation of neighboring bone structures, eye disorders (edema, abscess), obstruction in the brain vessels, brain abscess, meningitis, nasal and throat infections, pharyngitis and gastritis may occur. .
Most importantly, one should act in accordance with the recommendations given by the physician.
Medicines should be used without interruption, in accordance with the prescription. In treatments that are left unfinished, the disease progresses and becomes chronic, leading to negative consequences that lead to surgery.
I wish you all healthy and beautiful days.
