What is Menopause?

The word menopause, which originates from the ancient Greek words men (month) and pausis (termination), refers to the permanent cessation of menstruation as a result of the loss of activity of the ovaries. Menopause refers to the last menstrual period and 1 year has passed. The menopause period is a 20-year process that starts from the age of 40 and continues until the age of 60.

The menopause period is divided into three stages according to the classification of the World Health Organization. These are pre-menopause, menopause and post-menopause periods. The pre-menopausal period is the period in which menstruation occurs regularly or irregularly. Although it is not possible to give exact times and age limits for these periods, when we look at the world average, the average age of menopause is 50-52.

It was conducted by the Turkish Menopause Association in 2002 from various centers across our country. According to the data collected, the age of menopause in Turkey is reported as 46.7 years, and in clinical studies, the age of menopause in women living in cities is reported as 47.8 years. The 1993 Turkey Population Health Survey reported that 43% of women in the 45-49 age group nationwide were in natural or surgical menopause. According to the 2013 statistics of the State Institute of Statistics, life expectancy at birth in Turkey is 76.3 years in total for Turkey in general, 73.7 years for men and 79.4 years for women. In general, women live longer than men, with the difference in life expectancy at birth being 5.7 years. According to these data, women spend approximately the last 30 years of their lives in the menopause period.

In the post-menopausal period, which begins with the loss of ovarian functions and covers approximately one-third of a woman's life, expectations regarding the duration and quality of life are gradually increasing and treatment and treatment for menopause are increasing. approaches are gaining importance.
