10 Points to Consider to Prevent Early Puberty

Early Puberty is the onset of puberty before the age of 8 in girls and before the age of 9 in boys.

Early puberty has been increasing in the world and in our country in recent years. Especially with the change in nutrition and living conditions and the increase in obesity and exposure to endocrine disruptors, early puberty is more common.

Increasing obesity in childhood increases the possibility of early puberty. Because increased estrogen in obese children accelerates puberty development. Therefore, preventing obesity in the childhood age group will also be beneficial for early adolescence. On the other hand, obesity is a factor that reduces the success of early puberty treatment in children.

Food additives, pesticides, cosmetic products and endocrine disruptors in toys can initiate early puberty. Additionally, the use of products claimed to be natural, such as soy, lavender oil, fennel tea and bee pollen, may also lead to early puberty. Therefore, products on the market that claim to be natural plant extracts may pose a risk to children's health. On the other hand, the additives used in the production of junk foods that are attractive to children may also pose a risk of early puberty. Because all these products may contain harmful hormones called endocrine disruptors.

When these harmful products are used in childhood, which is the most sensitive period of human life, many negative effects may occur in later ages. Premature puberty may occur as a result of the use of a product claimed to be a natural herbal food supplement in children. However, it is often not possible to reveal that this food supplement is the cause of early puberty. Since their short and long-term benefits and harms in children have not been scientifically proven, these products do not have approval from the Ministry of Health. Families should be sensitive about this issue.

Endocrine disruptors are frequently found primarily in plastics, detergents, pesticides and industrial chemicals. It is not possible to completely avoid and get rid of these harmful substances. Therefore, it would be useful to pay attention to at least the following points:

  • Vegetables and fruits should be consumed in season and in appropriate amounts. It is important not to consume the same food constantly and in large amounts. In addition, vegetables and fruits should be as organic as possible and washed thoroughly with plenty of water.

  • Prefer fresh foods instead of canned foods. If preferred, products with cardboard containers and glass jars should be preferred. Known brands should be preferred and the expiration date of the products should be taken into consideration.

  • Plastic instead of glass, porcelain and stainless steel kitchenware (glasses, bottles, demijohns, containers, utensils, etc.) should be used. If plastic plates or cups are to be used, food and drinks should not be heated in the microwave and should not be washed in the dishwasher. If possible, single-use plastics should be preferred. It is also beneficial to use water purification devices that purify mains water.

  • It is not recommended to use cosmetics (perfume, deodorant, lotion, cream, nail polish, lipstick, etc.) in children. If it is necessary to use it, it should be preferred in very small amounts and without odor or additives.

  • Food additives used in the production of junk foods and food supplements claimed to be natural such as soy, lavender oil, fennel tea and bee pollen are also associated with early puberty development. may pose a risk.

  • Instead of deep-water fish, surface fish such as anchovies, horse mackerel and bonito, which have lower heavy metal contents, can be preferred.

  • Avoid soft plastic toys and choose cotton or wooden toys. If plastic toys and teethers are purchased, it should be checked that they do not contain Phthalates and Bisphenol A. Unreliable brands and products should never be used.

  • Teflon pots and pans should be used instead of stainless steel, ceramic and cast iron pots and pans. If Teflon is to be used, it should not be heated when empty and there must be liquid or food inside. It should be heated over low or medium heat and the teflon should not be allowed to scorch. The kitchen should be ventilated and an aspirator should be used during use. Teflons that are scratched or damaged should not be used.

  • Flame retardant and chemical-free flooring materials and furniture should be preferred in homes. It is also important to ventilate the house frequently and remove dust with slightly wet dust cloths, as well as to use vacuum cleaners with HEPA filters.

  • Chicken and dairy products of known and inspected brands There is no harm in consuming it.
