WHAT IS SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY?
It is an obesity surgery performed by surgically removing approximately 4/3 of the stomach, commonly known as Sleeve Gastric Surgery. Its name has become popular among the public because its shape after cutting resembles a tube. Otherwise, there is no possibility of any foreign material being inserted, my dear patients.
It provides weight loss through different mechanisms. Since the newly created stomach is significantly smaller than the normal stomach, you can be satisfied and happy with less food, thus causing you to consume fewer calories. However, its main effect is the change it creates in the gastrointestinal system, especially on the hormones that control hunger, satiety and blood sugar. With the increase in body mass index, the functioning of these hormones is impaired.
Looking at the long-term results, gastric sleeve surgery is an older procedure. It is a surgery as effective as gastric bypass in both losing weight and completely correcting or healing metabolic disorders such as diabetes. For example, as of the next day after the patient recovers from surgery, that is, before he or she even starts to lose weight, high blood sugar levels due to diabetes tend to return to normal, and medications and insulin used for diabetes can be completely or partially discontinued. In addition, gastric sleeve surgery is technically a surgery with fewer complications than gastric bypass surgery.
Sleeve gastrectomy is a restrictive surgery and 50-60% of the excess weight is lost in a short time. It allows easy administration of a foreign body, it does not have to be adapted to the body of a foreign body, it does not require a change in the passage route of food in the intestinal system since there is no change in the entry and exit of the stomach, the duration of hospital stay is shorter, it has positive effects on hunger, satiety and blood sugar regulating hormones in the gastrointestinal system. It is privileged in terms of availability.
Beyond these, which of these operations is deemed appropriate is decided by mutual discussion with the patient. And the follow-up afterward is at least as important as the operation. Not knowing how to eat after the operation was the first time of his new life. Not being able to find your doctor and team while determining the pattern of your days may negate the benefits of that operation, delay the expected results, and even cause more serious health problems.
