Most dreams cannot be remembered and are forgotten except for small fragments. However, the mood when we wake up from the dream can last all day. When we look at history, we can say that some people, such as emperors and warriors, attempted great things based on dreams. The basis of these lies in the idea that dreams are a message containing news from the future. According to psychological science, dreams carry traces of the past and present.
We usually experience dreams as visual images; There may also be emotions intertwined with thoughts, and other senses may also perceive something. But mostly visuality comes to the fore. The difficulty in explaining dreams arises, at least in part, from the need to express these visual images in words. That's why the dreamer may generally think that it is easier to draw a picture than to describe it.
Some of the dreams are very short and consist of only one or a few images, a single thought, or even a single word, while others are very rich in content and long like a novel. it could be. Some dreams are as clear and clear as in waking life, while others are blurry. Dreams can be completely meaningful, coherent, even fantastically beautiful, or they can be messy and crazy. In addition, there may be dreams that are painful enough to make you cry, anxious enough to wake you up, surprising or joyful, and others that do not create any emotions at all.
So why do we dream? In our unconscious, more commonly known as our subconscious, there are feelings and thoughts of which we are not aware. These millions of emotions and thoughts are never fully in harmony. They are always looking for a way to emerge. Our consciousness creates dreams to relax our minds and to partially reveal and reconcile these feelings and thoughts. However, the resistance mechanism does not allow these feelings and thoughts to appear clearly in dreams. Because these may be feelings and thoughts that the person will not accept in real life. In this case, it may cause anxiety in the person; therefore the mind censors. As a result of this censorship, the underlying emotions and thoughts are distorted, change and appear in a different way in the dream. Or the dream is rendered completely meaningless and when we wake up there is nothing. We cannot give any meaning.
Every dream is unique to the person who sees it. In this case, dreams are the product and words of the person who sees them. However, these words are not directly understandable. Dream interpretation is done to make these words understandable and to reveal the underlying feelings and thoughts. The dreamer knows what his dream means; but he just doesn't know what he knows and therefore thinks he doesn't know. At this point, the psychotherapist helps the person discover his dream. Dreams that have symbolic meaning due to the censorship applied can be interpreted by the psychotherapist and the dreamer working together. So why do we need this?
This is because some thoughts and emotions that appear in dreams are more intense than others. These put pressure on the person through dreams. When a person discovers these, he carries them from the unconscious to the conscious level and is now aware of what he will be struggling with. With psychotherapy, these feelings and thoughts are worked on in sessions. The aim is to reduce or eliminate the impact of these oppressive, disturbing emotions and thoughts. In this way, the pressure that the person unconsciously puts on himself is reduced and the way for a better life is opened. However, when these feelings and thoughts that put pressure on the person are discovered, the person can avoid talking about them; This is quite natural. The psychotherapist understands this issue and does not pressure the person about a subject he does not want to talk about. They all spread throughout the process, and when the person wants to talk about these issues, the psychotherapist does his part as always.
The person who learns to interpret his own dreams with psychotherapy can, over time, interpret his dreams on his own after a certain point. In this case, he will gain a very important ability to discover himself and get to know himself better. As a result, he can make his life better.
