When it comes to health, the first thing that comes to mind is physical health. However, health is the whole of mental health and physical health. There is no health without mental health. Five out of every ten diseases that cause loss of functionality are psychiatric diseases. The majority of people with mental health problems cannot seek treatment due to social pressure. Psychiatrist Dr. On October 10, World Mental Health Day, Uğur Hatıloğlu gave information about how mental illnesses affect people's lives and prevention methods.
- One in Four People is Affected by Mental Illnesses
The frequency and prevalence of psychiatric diseases are increasing and affecting every segment of society. Today, one in every four people is affected by mental illness at some point in their lives. Among people over the age of 75, more than half (50.8%) have experienced any mental illness. If psychiatric diseases are not treated, they cause individual, social and financial losses. According to the research of the World Health Organization; Psychiatric diseases constitute five of the ten diseases that most commonly cause loss of functionality in the world. These diseases are respectively; depression, alcohol use, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and obsessive compulsive disorder. When anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorders and schizophrenia are not treated adequately, they lead to more loss of function, loss of workforce and family problems.
- Those with Mental Health Problems Do Not Seek Treatment Due to Social Pressure
Psychiatric diseases are not limited to severe mental illnesses that disrupt a person's relationship with reality. In fact, such serious illnesses constitute a small proportion of all mental problems. Today, the stigmatization and exclusion of those with mental problems due to reasons such as urbanization, population growth, and future anxiety also cause problems at the social level. Stigmatization and exclusion, on the one hand, cause those with mental health problems to avoid seeking treatment.
