Breast self-examination consists of 4 steps

  • First step It is the visual examination of both breast tissues in front of a mirror. Our aim is to notice the visible swellings

  • To see whether there is a difference between the two breast tissues.

  • Seeing dimples and depressions that may occur on the skin

  • Redness, flaking, skin thickening, orange peel on the breast skin or nipple Having an appearance and seeing the wounds

  • Notice the new changes in the nipples, such as indentation or nipples pointing in different directions.

  • It is a visual examination after placing the hands on the waist. The hands are pressed on the waist. Meanwhile, we repeat what we did in the first step. During this examination, the examination is performed from different angles by turning right and left. Then, both hands are lifted up and skin shrinkages in both breast tissues, wrinkles and depressions in the skin seen in one breast are investigated.

  • This is a manual examination,

    • Those with small breast tissue can do this examination in front of a mirror, while those with large breast tissue should do this examination in a lying position.

    • When performing the examination, 3 fingers (index, middle and ring fingers) should be used. Breast tissue and nipple are examined with circular movements. It is necessary to carry out the examination with the hand on the other side.

    • First, the examination is performed with the arms at the side, then the arm is brought under the head and the examination is repeated.

    • The nipple should also be examined

  • Manual examination of the tissues around the breast

    • Examining the armpits

    • Above the collarbone and below

    • The areas below and within the breast tissue should also be examined.

  •

Self-performed breast examination is not a cancer screening, it cannot replace mammography and doctor's examination. We perform mammography and examination to detect breast cancers before they become palpable. Self-examination is only important to detect interval cancers, that is, cancers that develop in the period between two screening periods. And to catch women who cannot get breast cancer screening at the earliest possible stage.
