Renal and Urinary System Ultrasound

The urinary system is a system consisting of both kidneys, two urinary ducts going from both kidneys to the bladder, the bladder and the duct used to expel urine from the bladder. Kidney stones and urinary tract infections are the most common diseases of this system. Kidney stones may remain in the kidney or pass into the urinary tract. If the stone falls into the urinary tract, it can cause blockage and infection, causing serious pain. Patients present with sudden onset of flank pain. In this case, ultrasound examination is the first choice to evaluate the stone, its location, obstruction in the kidney and urinary tract, and signs of infection.

Tumoral masses developing in the kidney and bladder can be easily detected by ultrasound and color Doppler ultrasound. Color Doppler examination can help in diagnosis by examining the blood supply of the possible mass. In these cases, a biopsy of kidney masses can be performed under ultrasound guidance.

Another important organ of this system is the prostate. The prostate is an organ located circularly around the exit duct at the bottom of the bladder in men. They usually grow with age. This growth is determined by calculating the volume with ultrasound. Masses arising from the prostate can be detected by looking at the anterior abdominal wall or by entering rectally with an endocavitary probe.

Enlargements can be detected in the renal canals of babies in the womb and in the newborn period. In this case, the baby's canal dilations are checked at regular intervals. If it progresses too much, surgical intervention may be required. The most common causes of this condition are vesicoureteral reflux and posturethral valve.

One of the most common causes that can be detected in patients with hypertension is narrowing or irregularities in the renal vessels. This condition can be easily detected by renal color Doppler examination and treatment can be planned.

In patients with serious obstruction and enlargement in the kidneys and urinary tracts for any reason, in order not to disrupt kidney functions, a catheter is placed inside the kidney with an ultrasound-guided procedure called wig nephrostomy, and urine drainage can be performed outside through this catheter.
