Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialist Prof. Dr. Taner Güneş gave information about sports-related injuries and the main principles that should be followed to reduce these injuries. Güneş stated that sports carry some risks even if done regularly.
Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialist Prof. stated that regular sports have many benefits for the body. Dr. Taner Güneş explained that people experience minor sports-related injuries such as muscle strain, but some athletes, albeit a small number, may experience serious injuries such as cartilage separation or bone fracture. Prof. Dr. The most common sports injuries are: "Stress fractures may occur due to repetitive strain due to overuse. This type of injury may cause the athlete to withdraw from sports for a long time. Heel spurs may occur due to overuse. Ingrown toenails may also occur due to improper nail care and shoe use. "Achilles tendon strains, ankle ligament injuries and bone protrusions that occur especially in football players may be the cause of pain," he summarized. Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialist Prof. Dr. Taner Güneş said: “Meniscus tears, ligament ruptures and cartilage problems occur frequently. Chest pain may occur due to muscle spasm, which usually occurs during exercise. The possibility of shoulder dislocation is high, especially in flexible athletes. Additionally, muscle and tendon tears are frequently observed in throwing athletes. Elbow pain is frequently observed, especially in tennis players who use inappropriate rackets or whose racket holding technique is not correct.”
PREVENTION IS ALSO IMPORTANT
Prof. Dr. Güneş stated that protecting the athlete from injury is as important as the treatment of sports-related injuries. Explaining that for this purpose, active rehabilitation in which the doctor and the coach play an active role should be organized, Güneş said, “The most important issue is that the athlete has knowledge about injury prevention and fully complies with the necessary principles. Only in this way can the athlete use his/her capacity to the maximum safely for the longest time. In this way, the quality of the athlete will increase.”
IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO COMPLETELY PREVENT IT
Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialist Prof. noted that it is not possible to prevent all sports injuries. Dr. Taner Güneş stated that, however, at least the possibility of these occurring can be effectively reduced. Prof. Dr. Taner Güneş continued his explanation as follows: “For this reason, it is important to spare enough time before exercising and do appropriate warm-up exercises without getting bored or skipping. There should be no rush to start exercising as soon as possible. It is recommended not to overstrain the body. The athlete must know his own capacity and be pushed within this capacity. For example, football players should use injury-preventing equipment suitable for the sport, such as protectors to protect their shins.”
