Fibromyalgia Syndrome is a chronic musculoskeletal system disease characterized by clinical symptoms such as widespread pain, tenderness in specific anatomical areas, fatigue, sleep disorder, and spastic colon. Although there is widespread musculoskeletal pain, physical examination, laboratory findings and radiological examinations are normal.

A diet rich in antioxidants is important in fibromyalgia, which involves oxidative stress and inflammation. Healthy intestinal flora and a diet rich in Mediterranean-type fresh fruits and vegetables are recommended to relieve the symptoms of fibromyalgia. In the Mediterranean type diet, fresh fruits and vegetables, olives, olive oil, legumes, whole grains and oilseeds occupy a large part of the daily diet, while eggs, chicken, fish and semi-fat dairy products constitute the second important step. Red meat and meat products are consumed at low levels. Some examples of antioxidant foods are blueberries, blackberries, broccoli, tomatoes, spinach, green tea, red grapes, grapefruit and strawberries.

Consumption of mono sodium glutamate (MSG) and aspartame in high doses causes neurotoxic effects. Mono sodium glutamate restriction is effective in the symptomatic treatment of fibromyalgia. For this reason, foods such as ready-made soups, broth and chicken bouillons, chips, ready-made sauces, salami, soudjouk, sausages, frozen ready-made meatballs and meat dishes containing monosodium glutamate should be avoided.

BMI values ​​of patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia are compared to healthy individuals. Since they are high, they are also in the risk group for metabolic syndrome. Patients diagnosed with phycromyalgia who are overweight have lower quality of life, higher pain scores and physical dysfunctions.

As the resting metabolic rate of these patients may be slower, the patient's TSH, T3, T4 levels should be checked and appropriate exercise, vitamin and mineral supplements should be taken. and mineral supplements and hormone therapy should be given. It is important to prevent iodine deficiency, as the symptoms will be more pronounced if hypothyroidism is detected in these patients.

Since fibromyalgia is more likely to occur in individuals with iron deficiency anemia, iron levels should be checked and supplements should be taken if necessary. Examples of foods with high iron content White and red meat, liver, eggs, molasses, legumes and green leafy vegetables can be given. However, it should not be forgotten that the iron that is best absorbed and used in the body comes from animal sources, namely red meat. While consuming iron-rich foods, foods that reduce iron absorption in the body, such as tea, coffee, cola, ayran, yoghurt, and whole wheat products, should not be consumed. Instead, foods rich in vitamin C, which increase iron absorption, such as salad with plenty of greens and lemon, orange juice, and green pepper, should be preferred.

Due to the effect of vitamin D deficiency on pain in fibromyalgia patients, precautions should be taken and monitored against vitamin D deficiency.

In the presence of fibromyalgia, the antioxidant properties of micronutrients such as selenium, zinc and magnesium can be beneficial. For a diet rich in zinc, poultry, red meat, pumpkin seeds, lentils, hazelnuts, almonds, shrimp and hemp can be consumed. Foods with high selenium content: mushrooms, sunflower seeds, tuna, salmon, white and red meat, whole wheat bread, nuts, oilseeds. For magnesium, green leafy vegetables, oily seeds such as bananas and hazelnuts, legumes, cocoa, avocado, whole grains and seafood can be consumed.

Turmeric is one of the most powerful anti-inflammatory in nature. Curcumin, the active ingredient of turmeric, relieves pain. For this reason, it will be beneficial for fibromyalgia patients to consume turmeric every day.

Applied to patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia; It has been reported that many treatments such as acetyl-Lcarnitine, coenzyme Q10, Ginkgo biloba, collagen hydrolyzate and S-adenosyl-L-methionine provide improvement in some of the symptoms associated with FM, reduce chronic fatigue syndrome and pain, and improve the quality of life, but do not provide improvement in all symptoms. .

As a result, it is very important that the diet in fibromyalgia is colorful and rich in antioxidants provided by various fresh fruits and vegetables. It may be necessary to monitor vitamin D and magnesium levels and take supplements.
