How long will the treatment last?
Simple adjustments take less than 12 months, while more complex problems take longer. Changes that will occur in a short time are also limited. At the end of the treatment, it is mandatory to use retainers (stabilization devices / transparent plaque, etc.) that prevent the teeth from returning after the brackets are removed.
Will it be painful?
After the brackets are applied, you will have mild pain in the form of sensitivity in your teeth for approximately 3-5 days. If necessary, simple painkillers with the guidance of your orthodontist will help you relieve your pain. If your brackets rub against your lips and cheeks and cause discomfort, you can use orthodontic wax to relax the oral tissues during the initial period. Your orthodontist will give the necessary advice on this matter. Oral guards at night will help protect the tongue in individuals using lingual braces (facing the tongue surface).
How often will I need to come to appointments?
After the braces are applied, you should come to check-up appointments at regular intervals according to the requirements of the orthodontic treatment planned for you. These periods vary between 2-6 weeks from individual to individual.
Will there be any additional application when the treatment is completed?
After the brackets are removed at the end of the treatment, the teeth will return to their previous positions. You have to wear retention devices called "Retainers". These appliances can sometimes be installed and removed as transparent plates, and sometimes a fixed thin wire can be applied on the back surface of the front teeth. Your orthodontist will recommend the most suitable retainer for you.
You must use these retainers for the periods recommended for you. Retainers will prevent your teeth from returning to their previous positions after orthodontic treatment. The minimal dental changes expected with aging are considered normal, regardless of orthodontic treatment.
In order for your teeth to remain straight throughout your life, you have to use retainers for a certain part of your life.
REMINDER
-
Orthodontic braces can be applied at any age.
-
Your teeth and gums must be healthy before orthodontic treatment. You have to protect the health of these structures during the treatment process.
-
Some complicated problems in adults cannot be solved with brackets alone.
-
Despite the limitations of the treatment. Many types of brackets can be applied depending on the type of braces (Metal, Ceramic, Gold, Sapphire, Lingual).
If you are considering orthodontic treatment as an adult, you will need to ask your orthodontist a few questions.
Although treatment types vary, age; It is not a limiting factor for orthodontic treatment
Tooth gaps missing from birth or due to extraction can be closed with brackets, or the toothless gap can be arranged for implant or bridge prosthesis applications.
Can bracket visibility be reduced?
Ceramic or sapphire bracket applications, which are less visible than metal-colored brackets, are possible. In some cases, the appearance of brackets can be minimized by using brackets attached to the tongue-facing surfaces of the teeth.
Clear Aligner (transparent plate orthodontics) applications, which are almost invisible, are also possible without applying brackets.
Is it always possible to apply braces in adults?
Yes, but in cases involving certain jaw problems in adults, orthodontic treatments with brackets alone are not sufficient and additional jaw surgery is required.
In addition, existing caries and gum diseases are important before orthodontic treatment.
Is tooth extraction necessary?
If there is not enough space for the teeth to line up, orthodontic tooth extractions are considered routine procedures within orthodontic treatment practices. The spaces remaining from the extracted tooth are used to align the teeth and place them in their required positions. After the treatment, only you and your dentist will know that you had a tooth extracted.
