Comparison of University Freshman and University Senior Depression Levels

INTRODUCTION

Depression; also known as depression; It is defined as a mental disorder that occurs with thoughts such as mood, affect
disorders, physical and mental weakness, self-blame and worthlessness, ranging from sadness to intense grief. According to the students' perception of their success, it was determined that the depression levels of those who perceive themselves as "unsuccessful" are higher than those who perceive themselves as "successful". As depressive symptoms increase in university students, it is seen that the success of the course decreases. According to Duzgun, the depression level of first year students was expected to be higher than the depression level of senior students. However, in the research findings, there was no significant difference between the depression level of first year students and the depression level of senior students. In this study, it was aimed to re-comparison the depression status of university freshmen and university senior students.

Research Question:

1- Depression of university freshmen Is there a difference between the depression level of the university senior students and the depression levels of the university senior students?

The Hypothesis of the Study:

1- The depression levels of the first year university students levels are higher than the depression levels of senior university students.

METHOD

SAMPLE

sampling was applied. Attention was paid to the voluntary
participation of the participants in the research. Thirty people, 22 (73.33%) men and 8 (26.66%) women, participated in the research. The ages of the participants ranged from 18 to 24. The average age of female participants is 21.63, and the average age of male participants is 20.63. In total, the average age of the participants is 21.13.

MEASUREMENT TOOLS

Data were collected through a scale and a questionnaire. The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) was used to measure the depression levels of the participants. For demographic information, a demographic information
created by the researcher The i form was used and the information of the participants was obtained.

Demographic Information Form

To obtain the participants' information about themselves (age, gender) and in the first or last year< The questionnaire prepared by the researcher consists of 3 questions.
Participants are informed about the general purpose of the research with a directive
Beck Depression Inventory (BDI)
Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck (1961) is a self-assessment type scale consisting of 21 items. It measures the emotional, cognitive and
motivational symptoms seen in depression. Each item determines a behavioral characteristic
related to depression. Items are listed from 0 to 3. The purpose of the scale is to quantify the degree of symptoms. Validity and reliability studies of the scale were carried out and high values were reported. In a study conducted by Hisli on a psychiatric sample of 63 people, the correlation coefficient between the MMPI-D scale and BDI was found to be r=.63. In another study conducted by the same researcher, this time on university students (N=259); two-half test correlation is reported as r=.74 and internal consistency coefficient (Cronbach Alpha) as .80.

PROCESS

Scale and demographic information form given to the participants at Sabahattin Zaim University in Istanbul
. The scale and demographic information form were given to the senior group at the faculty of education, and to the first year
group at the faculty of the school of languages. It was collected back after completion. The application
took an average of 4 minutes for each person. The data were analyzed with the SPSS program.

RESULTS

1. The total depression level scores of the Grade 4 and Grade 4 groups were compared with the t-test (see
Table 1.1). As a result of the analysis, the total depression level scores of the 1st grade group (x=10.06,
sd=4.39) were significantly higher than the 4th grade depression level total scores (x=14.80, sd=6.93). was found to be low (t= -2.23, p≤.001).

Discussion

When the findings are analyzed in line with the main question of the research, it is seen that there is a significant difference between “depression status of university senior and first year university students”. In addition to this, contrary to the hypothesis of the research; it is seen that the depression level of the senior students is higher than the depression level of the first year students. This result shows that the research question is supported and the research hypothesis is significant in the opposite direction. It is difficult to generalize the findings to other university students. Because the participants of the research were selected not only from Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University, but also from students from different departments. In order for the research to be generalizable, it should be studied with different university students and students from the same department. This study, for example; It bears no resemblance to the work of Duzgun (1992). Although the hypothesis of the research is the same, no significant difference was observed in the data in the current study.
