What Is Lymphoma and How Is It Treated?

Tumors originating from the lymph nodes are called lymphomas. These are examined in two groups. The first is Hodgkin lymphoma. It is named as such in reference to the scientist who first discovered this disease. The other encompasses a large group with slightly different characteristics and is called non-Hodgkin lymphoma altogether.

Istanbul Florence Nightingale Hospital, Department of medical oncology, Prof. Dr. Coşkun Tecimer draws attention to the symptoms of lymphoma step by step.

Lymphomas Are Divided into Four Stages

“As the degree of prevalence increases, the stage grows. The lower the stage, the better they are treated. If the patient does not have fever, sweating and weight loss, this indicates a better outcome.

Chemotherapy can be used in treatment, and in some cases, both chemotherapy and radiation therapy can be applied. Surgery should not be performed in lymphomas, except for some organ lymphomas. Generally, chemotherapy and radiation therapy are applied together in the early stages. Radiation therapy alone can also be given in early stage Hodgkin lymphoma, which has very good features. In the third stage, chemotherapy can be applied either alone or in combination with radiotherapy. In the last stage, only chemotherapy can be given. For this reason, it is of great importance to determine the stage of the disease before deciding on treatment.”

Recurrence may be seen in some cases in lymphomas!

“In such cases, re-chemotherapy or bone grafting may occur. marrow transplant may be considered. Bone marrow transplant is taken from the patient if his/her marrow has been cleaned. It is given to the patient after chemotherapy. Sometimes, especially in more advanced cases, bone marrow is taken from the appropriate donor.

Monoclonal antibodies developed in later years can also be used in recurrent lymphomas compared to chemotherapy. These can be given with chemotherapy or alone.

It is very important to consult a physician for early diagnosis of the disease:

Fever, especially fluctuating fever, sweating, weight loss and fatigue...

Itching symptom can be seen in Hodgkin lymphoma.

For all cancers, regular exercise, vegetable-based diet, not gaining weight, avoiding smoking and tobacco products, not using alcohol or reducing as much as possible if drinking important.”
