Articulation Disorders
Articulation is the answer to the question of how speech sounds are made. This is created by using airflow coming from the tongue, jaw, teeth, lips, palate and vocal folds. Articulation disorder involves problems in producing sounds. In articulation disorders, sounds can be skipped; ak instead of yak
They can be replaced; tapa instead of kapa
It may be broken; nasal instead of scissors, that is, a growling scissors
As a simpler example, when the child does not have the /r/ sound, he says kaya instead of kara. In order for the child to say kara, he/she must learn how to make the /r/ sound.
In our institution, children with pronunciation problems are taught the production of each sound quickly and generalization to daily life is ensured within 2 to 4 weeks.
>Phonological Disorder
Phonological disorders are difficulties in acquiring information about language rules (phonology/phonology) in speech. The child pronounces the word but it is not understandable. Developmental phonological disorders can cause reading and writing difficulties in children.
Some examples of phonological disorders are;
The child says "del" instead of "come" or "key" instead of "bird". ' der(Prevention).
The child says 'du' instead of 'su' or 'pare' instead of 'mouse' (Pause)
Important Differences Between Articulation Disorder and Phonological Disorder
While errors in articulation disorder are related to the speech sound, errors in phonological disorder are related to the language-specific functions of phonemes. In articulation disorder, there is difficulty in the speech sound form, while in phonological disorder, the child can produce the phoneme properly but does not use it appropriately in the required context. In articulation disorders, errors are more peripheral, whereas in phonological disorders, errors occur centrally. When the components of the language are evaluated in articulation disorders, there may be no problems in areas such as suffixes, syntax, and semantics, whereas problems may be observed in phonological disorders.
