Masked Depression

Depression is an overwhelming state that includes deep sadness, pain and sorrow. This process also includes mood states such as not being able to enjoy events that were previously pleasurable as much as before and loss of interest. There is a deterioration in the person's daily functionality, that is, in doing his job. There is a slowdown in mental and physical areas due to lack of energy. In short, the person is joyless, hopeless, tired, exhausted and intolerant.

There is no single type of depression, and sometimes it is more difficult to recognize depression, diagnose the disease and direct it to treatment. Especially if this depression is "masked depression". Masked depression mostly occurs with symptoms of physical illness. While physical symptoms, alcohol and substance abuse, and sexual dysfunctions are more prominent, other symptoms of depression remain in the background. Fatigue, sleep and appetite changes, disturbances in body functions, and unexplained pain are common. Apart from mental and physical slowness, sleep disturbance, and decreased focus of interest, the classic symptoms of depression are rarely seen. In this type of depression, a general state of malaise prevails, accompanied by waist, back, neck, joint, headaches, or traveling pains affecting different parts of the body. The person feels anxiety that he has a serious disease such as cancer or an undiagnosed chronic fatal disease due to these pains, which he cannot name and which do not correspond to an exact disease. He goes from doctor to doctor, undergoes many tests and examinations, but cannot reach the desired result. Masked Depression; It is more common in societies that cannot express their feelings and sadness.

It is a disease of those who prefer to suppress their anger rather than expressing it. Patients express their distress not with their words, but with their bodies. Instead of saying that these behaviors make me angry and this situation I am experiencing makes me very sad, they complain of ongoing pain and ache in many parts of their body. In cases of ongoing chronic pain, it is important to recognize the disease, get help and support, and not avoid medication and psychotherapy when necessary.
