The Relationship between Eating Disorders and Personality Structures

Nutrition, which is one of our most basic needs, is very important for our survival. Eating habits differ from person to person, and if these habits continue for a long time in an extremely unbalanced and unhealthy way, eating disorders can occur. Eating disorders are a disorder that negatively affects human psychology, as well as stomach, liver or heart disorders. Eating disorders, which are generally seen at young ages and mostly in women, are divided into several different types. One of the most common eating disorders is Anorexia Nervosa.

Anorexia Nervosa; People who care excessively about their appearance, limit the food they eat and decrease to abnormally low weight.

Another one is Bulimia Nervosa; Bulimia patients who consume a lot of food in a short time are very ashamed of this situation. The feeling of shame combined with the fear of gaining weight results in them making themselves throw up forcibly. In order to prevent weight gain, they can apply heavy sports and diet programs. Today's perceptions of beauty or the desire to attract attention can trigger this situation.

Psychological problems that occur with eating disorders can be seen as depression, anxiety disorders and personality disorders.

In some cases, perfectionism in the narcissistic personality structure

In borderline personality structure, the need for attention or wanting to be seen may push them to overeat or eat too little. This imbalance and binge eating disorders can occur. For the borderline personality structure, being a victim or needy means being cared for. The reason for this is that the borderline personality structure with eating disorder reflects this situation as good or bad. The borderline structure, which descends to abnormally low weights, can reflect the self-confidence of being very weak in a good way or the difficulties of being underweight as a victim and needy. Seeing care and attention with this projection is a blessing for them.
