People with obesity problems experience many health problems caused by excess weight. Chief among these are; Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia (high blood lipids), joint disorders, ovarian cysts, depression and some types of cancer.
One of the most common disorders that accompany obesity and listed above is joint disorders. The most obvious of these disorders are; disc herniations, that is, waist and neck herniations, and arthrosis (calcification) in the knees. The main cause of herniated discs is the deterioration of the body's posture, which we call posture, due to weight and the shifting of the body's center of gravity. The main cause of knee problems is wear and deterioration in the joint capsule due to the increased weight carried by the knees. Knee joints are supported by strong joint ligaments and joint capsule to bear the weight of the body. In addition, intra-articular fluid distributes weight evenly and reduces friction. As body weight increases, it becomes more difficult for the knee joint to fulfill this protective function. If the person does not lose weight over time, wear and structural disorders occur in the joint, and eventually knee replacement surgery becomes inevitable. The probability of developing knee joint disorders is twice as high in obese individuals compared to normal weight individuals.
It is necessary to lose weight in order to get rid of these joint problems that occur due to obesity. In people who lose weight and reach or approach their ideal weight, their joint problems quickly regress and their gait and body movements become easier. Scientific studies show that, in obese people with a body mass index over 40 Kg/m2, losing 67% of their excess weight reduces the load on their knees by 50%.
One of the obesity surgeries (Stomach by Pass, stomach reduction) It has been revealed that complaints about knee and waist joints decrease by 80% in individuals who lose weight by undergoing weight loss. Again, while some of these people were going to have surgery due to knee prosthesis or lumbar disc herniation, there was no need for surgery after losing weight. Our experiences with our own patients also show that; ob in people who are indicated to require knee prosthesis surgery After performing bruising surgery and losing weight, the prosthesis was abandoned.
