School is the second social institution in a child's life after the family. The reactions of children who have just started school are very important. With school life, children enter a brand new, different social relationship network. It would be beneficial for parents and teachers to carefully examine the importance of this critical beginning. Because the beginning of a business is always important. Sometimes it is so important that a false start can cause subsequent relationships to turn into a series of mistakes.
The role of education in increasing the child's self-confidence, completing and shaping his identity and personality development, socializing and learning to share cannot be denied. Parents and teachers are the ones who will develop and develop these abilities in the child.
During the starting school period, the child must reach a certain level of maturity - physically, mentally, socially and psychologically. The level of physical maturity is more related to the biological aspect of the child and is related to his genetic structure and nutrition. In this case, other than waiting for the child to reach this level of maturity, there may not be many precautions that can be taken during the school starting period. However, when the child starts school, he/she is mentally, socially and psychologically; In other words, many precautions can be taken to prepare for the new social environment. It is possible to collect them at the following points:
- One of the first things to do is to prepare the child for school. For this purpose, the child's life experiences in the pre-school family environment should be enriched and the child should be opened to the social environment outside the family, step by step. This includes introducing the child to peer groups in the immediate vicinity; park, garden and playground etc.
- A goal for the future can be created in the child's preschool family environment. If this goal includes going to school and being successful there, the problem can be overcome on its own. If families with children starting school are conscious about this issue, determine a goal for the future with their children, and include school success in this goal, this can activate the child's sense of longing for going to school. A child with such a longing will not feel afraid when he/she goes to school, he/she will only be happy.
- The most important task after starting school falls on the teacher. Teachers are one of the models that children encounter after parents. The attitude of the teacher is very important in overcoming the school fear, which is defined as a mental disorder and is encountered when schools are opened. One of the underlying reasons for school fear, and perhaps the most important one, is the child's fear of failure in the school environment. In order to overcome this situation, teachers should allocate more time for fun and games in the first days of school, and instead of activities that children have difficulty in doing, they should include activities that they can do easily, where they can be encouraged and taste success, and where they can develop their self-belief and self-confidence.
- In the family environment before starting school; A brand new and complex network of relationships in the new environment awaits the child, who is at the center of the family and has formed a self-centered personality structure. The child, who did not share his parents with anyone before starting school, is forced to share his teacher, who is important to him. The child, who had his own toys and belongings until the school year, begins to share everything in the classroom environment. A chain of rules awaits the child at school, who until that day was the lovable naughty one of the house, sitting wherever he wanted and sleeping however he wanted. While such important changes are taking place in the child's life, the attitudes and behaviors of the teacher are very important in increasing adaptation to school.
