Spinal Curvatures

1. Kyphosis

What is Kyphosis (Hunchback)?

The fact that the thoracic curvature in the lateral scoliosis radiographs of the patients is above normal limits is called kyphosis. According to the SRS classification, thoracic (T5-T12) curvature varies between 10-400. Thoracic kyphosis is generally more common in men.

What are the causes of kyphosis?

Kyphosis usually occurs due to reasons such as trauma, developmental anomalies, degenerative disc disease, infection. interest. Apart from this, it is also possible to be seen in cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy or neuromuscular diseases, spine and spinal cord tumors.

What are the most common causes of kyphosis in the clinic?

1 . Scheuermann Kyphosis
2. Kyphosis developing after spine surgery
3. Kyphosis developing after trauma
4. Ankylosing Spondylitis
5. NM kyphosis
6. Congenital kyphosis

What is Idiopathic Scoliosis?

Curves greater than 10 degrees on anteroposterior direct radiography are called scoliosis. .

What is the Natural Course?

There are basic factors that determine whether the curvature will increase or not in scoliosis patients. The patient's age, gender, puberty period, location and degree of the curvature determine whether the curvature will increase or not. The curvature is more likely to progress in girls. Advanced curvatures, thoracic curvatures and double curvatures tend to progress more likely.

How is Idiopathic Scoliosis Treated?

• Exercise

It has been reported that the progression of scoliosis decreases and in some cases the degree of curvature decreases with scientific rehabilitation programs applied to patients followed up with a diagnosis of idiopathic scoliosis.

• In Which Patients Should a Corset Be Used?

One of the aims of treatment in patients with idiopathic scoliosis is to slow down the progression of the curvature as much as possible until the patient completes adolescence. The corsets used for this purpose are designed to suit the patient's body. It would be appropriate to use a corset in patients whose curvature is 20-40 degrees and maturity is not completed. Milwaukee, Wilmington, Spine-Cor and Boston type corsets are corsets that can be used in patients with idiopathic scoliosis.

• Which Patients Require Surgery?

Surgical treatment should be considered in patients with curvature over 50 degrees.

How is Surgical Treatment Planning Done in Patients with Idopathic Scoliosis?

Surgical planning should be made appropriate to the location, type and degree of the curvature. Which vertebrae of the patient will be included in the correction and which will be released are evaluated according to the anteroposterior and lateral scoliosis radiographs taken before surgery, as well as side bending radiographs.
