Stress and Trauma

Stress is a part of daily life. We use and hear this word very often. So is all stress harmful? How much stress is too much stress? What is the reason why one of two people exposed to the same stress becomes depressed and the other continues his life as is?

Stress; It is the psychological and physical strain of the organism in new situations encountered. The reactions given to adapt to this new situation are called stress reactions.

Humans are capable of coping with stress in many ways. A certain amount of stress is beneficial for growth and optimal functioning. Exposure to these stresses may even increase a person's resilience to greater stresses in the future.

However, in long-term (chronic) stress or some types of stress such as childhood traumas, stress circuits in the brain may become sensitive.

Post-Traumatic. In Stress Disorder, the person has; sleep problems, nightmares, frequent disturbing memories of the event, constant fear that the event will repeat itself and therefore feeling on edge, being easily startled, getting angry easily, not being able to plan for the future, restless in situations that remind one of the event. These symptoms occur in many people in the days following psychological trauma and usually resolve spontaneously within a few weeks, but in some people they may last for months or even years. Symptoms can sometimes begin months after the traumatic event has occurred.

Childhood traumas or subsequent traumatic events are quite common in society. However, due to some reservations and fears, consulting a specialist is less common. When the individual shares this with his/her relatives, he/she may encounter suggestions such as "don't worry about it", "forget it", "don't tell anyone about this". To put it as the proverb goes, "The arm breaks, but it remains in the sleeve."

Those who have experienced psychological trauma know that; It is not easy to forget. Because metaphorically, any wound in our body will cause inflammation and pain while healing. In order to treat this inflammation, it will first be necessary to open it and maybe make it bleed a little. In this way, that inflammation will be prevented from spreading to the whole body.

If our brain has not been able to process and place a trauma in its library, the hippocampus, it will constantly and repeatedly occur in different bodies. It will give physical and spiritual reactions.

With psychotherapy, psychological traumas are discussed (with appropriate techniques) and past information and experiences that the brain cannot process and digest are processed.
