Fasting During Pregnancy and Postpartum Period

The most common question my patients ask during Ramadan is whether they can fast. Of course, this is where the conscientious dimension comes into play. While expectant mothers want to fulfill their religious duties, they also want to avoid harming their little babies.

Limited studies on the subject in Arab countries and Turkey show that long periods of fasting cause a decrease in blood sugar levels in the mother, dehydration (thirst) due to lack of fluid intake, and as a result of these situations, the baby's activity decreases, weight gain decreases. He states that an increase is observed in risky situations such as interruption in intake, deterioration in amniotic fluid balance, contractions and premature birth. It is also emphasized that the use of supplementary formula increases due to the decrease in milk supply during the postpartum period.

When we look at the religious dimension of fasting and pregnancy, as it is written on the page of the Presidency of Religious Affairs, pregnant women and postpartum women are exempt from fasting and can make up for the fast they could not keep in a later period. we know.

My personal opinion is that the mother and the baby will be negatively affected due to the longer time spent hungry and thirsty during the summer months. Pregnancy and postpartum periods should not be confused with the periods experienced by other healthy people. We are talking about a period in which the functioning and reactions of the body completely change. That's why I think it would be appropriate for mothers and expectant mothers to make up for it after their periods without fasting, for the health of their most valuable asset.

My suggestion for pregnant women and postpartum women who want to fulfill their fasting duty despite everything is to have 2 main and 2 snacks after iftar until sahur, to eat protein-rich foods that will keep you full for a long time, to keep their fluid intake between 2-3 liters, They should not tire themselves too much during the day and follow their body's reactions very well, and when they realize that they are having a hard time, they will make up for the remaining days. Of course, I would like to point out that I exclude from this willing group my patients who are in the first trimester, where the probability of miscarriage is high, and who have 1 month left until birth.

Hoping that the month of Ramadan will be auspicious for you and the puppies you are longing for...
