Why People Feel the Need to Attack Through Social Media

Social media has become the most important, perhaps the first preferred, means of communication today. Social media platforms, which are in such high demand, have inevitably begun to constitute an element of power in the hands of people. While social media communication tools sometimes enable us to have a pleasant time, sometimes they can cause sad situations. While we have such powerful communication tools at our disposal, we may not always use them for good purposes. Sometimes they can serve as a tool to convey the grudge or hatred within us. So why do people feel the need to attack someone else through social media?

Before the age of social media, people expressed their anger in their own ways. While some resorted to physical violence, others would act out their urge to attack with verbal expressions. People who can control their anger would prefer objects that can convey their anger, such as doing sports or taking up hobbies. With the invention of social media communication platforms, a new tool was born through which people can convey their anger. Although this tool does not cause physical damage, it can cause serious negative psychological effects. Underneath this violence, as always, lies the impulse of anger that comes from the nature of human existence. In physical fights, people may withdraw or stop themselves at some point in order to avoid being harmed, but since there is no threat to physical integrity on social media, people can vent their anger without restricting themselves. Of course, this does not apply to every person. Anger control mechanisms are also included here. People who cannot control these mechanisms act with the primitive brain (subcortical structures) by deactivating the judgment and judgment center of the brain and may be in a situation where they cannot calculate the consequences. Some users may be evaluated within the framework of the psychology definition, which is considered as the concept of antisocial personality traits that are opposite to the ability to socialize, which may be a situation that may require psychological treatment. Underlying this structure of anger conveyed through social media are thoughts/feelings/feelings of "inadequacy". The feeling he created on the person he attacked via social media He may act impulsively with his work, and the ones that disturb him the most and cause the most intense anger are the feelings of "inadequacy", "not being good enough", "trying to prove himself", "lack of self-confidence". The most severe social media attacks are generally posts initiated by mass lynching movements. Social media accounts, which think that they have gathered an audience behind such posts, drag an angry community that acts with primitive brain structures by sharing posts in line with their intended purpose. This community, which has common concerns, can harm themselves or others as a result of their impulsive actions. From this perspective, social media communication platforms, which may seem innocent, are not as innocent as they seem. Of course, we cannot blame programs consisting only of ones and zeros for this. Untamed human nature, which turns them into weapons in its hands, is the biggest responsible for this situation. Perhaps the most effective and correct action that can be taken in this regard is to disseminate training on the use of social media in our country and around the world. Shares that go as far as violating private life may be evaluated by law enforcement bodies with effective sanctions.
