Ear Anatomy

Ear anatomy is examined in 3 main parts.

Auricle and external auditory canal

Middle ear (tympanic membrane, middle ear cavity, eustachian tube)

Inner ear (organ of hearing and balance)

Auricle: It consists of skin and cartilage. It allows the sound to be directed to the external ear canal

External Ear Canal: is approximately 2.5 cm long. The outer 1/3 consists of cartilage and the inner 2/3 consists of bone.

Eardrum: It is a structure with a diameter of approximately 1 cm that separates the middle ear from the outer ear.

Middle Ear Cavity: inside the middle ear cavity. There are hammer, anvil and stirrup bones. The middle ear is ventilated through the eustachian tube.

Eustachian tube: It is a structure approximately 3.5 cm long, located between the middle ear cavity and the nasal cavity.

Balance organ: consists of semicircular canals and vestibule.
