Can Covid-19 Vaccines Be Applied During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding?

The pandemic process we are in as of 2019; It has brought with it many difficulties, struggles and sacrifices. While we were struggling with difficulties in this process, it was true that we were always looking forward to the good news of the vaccine.

Coronavirus Disease is a virus of animal origin; It is transmitted from person to person through droplet infection, contact and, in some cases, particles suspended in the air. The majority of pregnant women infected with SARS CoV-2 are expected to experience mild or moderate cold/flu-like illness. However, pregnant women may experience problems that occur during pregnancy; In addition to decreased lung capacity and increased oxygen consumption, patients are at high risk of complications due to physiological changes in the immune system. Based on current information, there is no evidence that COVID-19 increases the risk of miscarriage or teratogenicity in pregnant women.

Although it is unclear to what extent COVID-19 vaccines prevent or limit transmission of the disease, preliminary data are available. Vaccines have shown to reduce the duration and severity of disease if a person becomes infected. As of February 19, 2021, the results of 1,815 pregnant women have been published, including 275 completed pregnancies. To date, no unexpected results have been observed regarding mRNA COVID-19 vaccines administered during pregnancy in terms of Gestational DM, Preeclampsia, IUGR, miscarriage rates, stillbirth rates, preterm birth and newborn deaths.
