Male Nannies

Can a man show the same care to a baby as a woman?

There is a common belief that women have the innate ability to raise children and men lack this skill. However, many situations experienced today also show that this may be different. We have recently seen in both local and foreign media that there are many women who give inadequate care to their children. On the other hand, there are more and more men who are as skilled as a woman in childcare, sometimes even more than before.

What kind of training do you think a man should receive regarding baby care? What should they learn?

Male nannies should learn about the baby's psychological and physiological development characteristics, care, nutrition, clothing, first aid, feeding and toilet habits, adaptation and behavioral problems (such as thumb sucking, bedwetting). They need to receive training on subjects such as physical ailments (such as gas pains, toothaches and earaches, diaper rash), games and activities according to age, songs and fairy tales.

Do you think baby care is something that is professional and can be learned? , or could it be an instinctive side?

It is thought that women are born with the instinctive ability to carry, give birth and care for the baby. However, today's understanding of baby care is not only to meet the baby's basic care needs, but also to support the child's language, mental and psychological development. This is only possible if nannies receive training on this subject. Therefore, baby care can be learned as well as being instinctive.

What might be the pros and cons of a male nanny?

Modelling: Especially for boys, having a male nanny is important in terms of modeling. Especially considering that fathers work hard, come home late, and go on business trips frequently, the time the child spends with his father is quite short. In this case, a male nanny may be more suitable in terms of having a male model.

Active Activities:The reason why male nannies are preferred is that they are more successful especially in active activities (such as ball, car, repairing).

Competition:Mothers may sometimes see female nannies as rivals. Especially when the nanny can do something that the mother cannot do (such as feeding or putting her to sleep), the mother may feel uncomfortable and question her own mothering skills or choose to terminate the nanny's employment. When the nanny is a man, there will be no such competition.

Not taking the mother's place:The biggest problem of the working mother is not being able to spend enough time with her child and not being able to take care of him enough. It is both pleasing and enviable for the mother that another woman does this job instead of them and the child shows closeness to the nanny. She may think that the nanny has taken her place in the child's eyes. However, when there is a male nanny, this is not the case.

Authority:Most children grow up in a world surrounded by women. A child whose mother, nanny, housekeeper and teacher are all women may, over time, not accept the authority of women. Especially for boys, having a male nanny can make them see him as both an older brother and an authority.

However, while female nannies are expected to support the housework from time to time, it may not be possible to expect this from male nannies. Parents may not prefer a male nanny for their daughters. Fathers may see male nannies as rivals.

Does this trend abroad seem to be preferable in Turkey?

Recently, this trend has been preferred by the general society. Although it may not seem acceptable, it may be preferred by the upper socio-cultural part of the society, especially for male child care.
