Research has shown that more women are suffering from cardiovascular disease every year. It is a major health problem, especially in women over the age of 65. Research by the Turkish Cardiology Association also shows that female heart disease is increasing in our country.

Death from heart disease in women is many times higher than the sum of breast, lung, ovarian and uterine cancers. It has emerged in the last 10-15 years that there are differences between the two genders in matters such as the development of cardiovascular disease, the course of symptoms and response to treatment.

Since 1944, the World Health Organization (WHO) has been focusing on women's health in Central and Eastern European countries. Separate and special importance has been given. In 2001, the Copenhagen Action Plan on women's health was made and within this framework, "Women's Heart Health" was particularly highlighted. The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) started the "Women in the Heart" campaign in March 2005.

The purpose of this campaign is to raise awareness about the increasing and severe course of heart diseases in women and to draw the attention of women and health professionals to the issue. It is aimed to raise awareness about the approaching danger in 49 countries, including Turkey.

The issue was discussed in detail in the "National Heart Health Policy" report prepared by the Turkish Cardiology Association. The targets revealed by the TEKHARF (Heart disease risk factors in Turkish adults) research were determined as smoking, hypertension and obesity, and the campaign was launched.
