Can We Prevent the Development of Diabetes?

Diabetes disease is increasing as an epidemic in our country and around the world. Accordingly, deaths from heart diseases and stroke are increasing. The rate of overt diabetes in our country has increased to 18%. In addition, although they do not have diabetes, diabetes, which we call prediabetes (the stage before diabetes), is around 10% in our society in patients with slightly elevated blood sugar levels. Therefore, one in every four people has problems with high blood sugar. In the past, diabetes was known as a disease seen in the elderly. However, unfortunately, today, Type 2 diabetes is diagnosed quite frequently starting from the age of 20.

In the light of this information, we can say that if we can eliminate the reasons that cause the prevalence of diabetes compared to 20 years ago, we can delay or even prevent the development of diabetes. In my article last week, I talked about people who are prone to diabetes. Those who have diseases such as obesity, a family history of diabetes, a history of diabetes during pregnancy, polycystic ovary syndrome, cholesterol and hypertension are people prone to diabetes.

We can delay or prevent diabetes by paying attention to what risky people do to delay and prevent the development of diabetes. I would like to examine this issue under three topics.

First, I will talk about nutrition regulation and healthy eating, secondly, physical activity, and thirdly, the drugs I can use to prevent diabetes.

Regular and healthy nutrition should actually be our most important method to prevent diabetes. Unfortunately, our society has an incredible carbohydrate eating habit. Pasta, potatoes, rice and all flour products are actually foods with high carbohydrate content. In this type of eating habit, the pancreas is constantly stimulated to secrete insulin, leading to very rapid weight gain. In the younger generation, fatty eating habits (fast food) along with carbohydrates tire the pancreas and lead to weight gain. That's why diabetes is diagnosed quite frequently after the age of 20. As a society, we should definitely reduce pure carbohydrate foods, instead our carbohydrate needs should be obtained from foods containing complex carbohydrates (vegetables, fruits, legumes). We have to get it from here. In addition, the products we need for bread should be taken from whole wheat or whole wheat products containing fiber.

Increasing physical activity and gaining regular sports habits are important issues in preventing the development of diabetes and obesity. Unfortunately, in the modern age, our movements have decreased by 80 percent. Our movements are very restricted due to houses with elevators, escalators, cars and easier transportation. We cannot say that we, as a society, have the habit of doing sports anyway. In addition, our active life, which is limited by the introduction of television, computers and smart phones into our lives, has made it possible for us to do almost all our work sitting down. Especially the young generation has come to the point where they prefer playing games on the computer and dealing with the phone instead of doing sports. We need to make our young generation especially active. Therefore, methods that increase physical activity should be encouraged both in schools and in other members of the society. Especially high-risk people should exercise regularly at least 4-5 days a week. As for this type of sports, sports that increase socialization such as basketball, football, volleyball and tennis, which are played collectively by young people, should be preferred. We need to save our youth from thinking that sports are games played on computers. For middle-aged people, doing sports habits such as walking, jogging, swimming at least 3-4 times a week will help them lose weight and will make an extra contribution to preventing the development of diabetes.

As a result, eating habits that prevent weight gain will help them lose weight. Corrections and regular exercise habits are our most important weapons in preventing diabetes. In suitable patients, the medications prescribed by the physician contribute to delaying the development of diabetes.

I wish you healthy days.
