There may be some risks in in vitro fertilization treatment, as with any treatment. The incidence of these risks is approximately 5%.
Some of these risks are; These can include weight gain, enlargement in the abdominal area, and overstimulation of the ovaries. These risks arise from a condition called OHSS. Overstimulation syndrome, or OHSS, rarely requires treatment in hospital conditions.
If outside OHSS; There is a risk of multiple pregnancy, miscarriage and premature birth. The risks of premature birth and miscarriage are not the risks seen due to in vitro fertilization treatment. These two negative situations occur due to infertility reasons. Apart from this, there is no support for the views that in vitro fertilization treatment causes breast or ovarian cancer.
What is OHSS?
Overstimulation of the ovaries can be defined as the body's excessive response to the drugs used during ovarian stimulation. For this reason, estrogen levels increase and the ovaries grow larger than the desired and expected size. OHSS is a side effect that can be treated in a short time and is not life-threatening.
OHSS symptoms are:
- nausea
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- tension
- fluid accumulation in the lungs and abdomen
- difficulty in breathing
- decreased amount of urine
- blood pressure decrease
- A range can be followed, ranging from deterioration in kidney and liver functions to deterioration of the electrolyte balance in the body.
OHSS; It can be seen in mild, moderate and severe forms. The rarest form of OHSS is the severe form. At this stage, hospital treatment may be required. Even the severe form is treated within a week. OHSS, which is observed at mild and moderate levels, can often be controlled with a protein-rich diet, plenty of fluid intake and rest, without the need for hospital treatment.
Drugs used during in vitro fertilization and their effects
There are various medications and hormone treatments in in vitro fertilization treatment. It is thought that these drugs may increase the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. However, research and studies Studies have not revealed that these ideas have no scientific basis. The fact that the expectant mother never gives birth is the most important factor that increases breast cancer.
