Penis Curvature

Penile curvature may be congenital or may appear later. Congenital curvatures are called "congenital penile curvature". Congenital curvatures may be accompanied by hypospadias or epispadias, which is the opening of the urinary tract opening in the wrong place. In this case, the correction process will include not only the curvature but also the correction of the urination hole and moving it to the appropriate place.

Penile curvatures, which occur later and are called "Peyronie's disease", are usually seen between the ages of 40-60. . The reason is not exactly known. Although different theories have been put forward as to the reason for its formation, none of them have been definitively accepted.

Congenital penile curvature is corrected surgically during adolescence. The procedure is usually performed under operating room conditions with anesthesia from the waist. The surgery is over in less than an hour.

Peyronie's disease is divided into two periods: acute and chronic. The acute phase usually covers the first 6 months of the disease and is often accompanied by pain. The period in which calcium accumulates in the tissue and there is no pain, but there is curvature and it takes its final shape, is the chronic period.

Treatment is divided into two: surgical and non-surgical (conservative) treatment. Conservative treatments should be applied to patients whose general condition is not suitable for surgery or who do not accept surgery. Penile traction and vacuum devices should be used to eliminate deformity and lengthen the penis. Other treatments are not recommended by sources.

Surgical treatment should be performed after at least a 3-month stable period of the disease if sexual intercourse is affected by the deformity. Surgical treatment is not the right option during painful periods. Before treatment, penis length, erectile function, degree of curvature and the patient's expectations should be evaluated. The patient should be adequately informed about complications after surgical treatment. If the patient also has erectile dysfunction that is unresponsive to drug treatment, penile prosthesis implantation should be performed.
