Teeth Clenching (Bruxism): It is non-functional habits that manifest themselves with strong jaw movements that occur during sleep in general. Our teeth in the lower and upper jaw should not come into contact with each other except for chewing and swallowing functions. Tooth contacts other than chewing and swallowing are considered non-functional movements. Clenching problem is the behavior of teeth clenching outside of chewing and swallowing day or night. The patient himself is often unaware of this disorder, which is frequently seen in our daily lives.
There are two main reasons for the habit of clenching teeth. The first and most important of these is stress, and the other is closing disorder. So, what kind of negative situations can we face as a result of the habit of clenching teeth? Teeth wear and tear. Teeth may be fractured, cracked and displaced. White lines appear on the inside of the cheek and traces of teeth appear around the tongue. Pain occurs in the head, neck and facial muscles. Lower face height decreases, chin tip and nose tip approach each other and an older appearance occurs. The lower jaw moves forward over time and a concave (concave) profile image is formed. The face appears angular and square.
Although the habit of clenching teeth manifests itself at night, it has been determined that the same functional disorder is observed in the daytime in advanced cases. The purpose of teeth clenching treatments; To prevent permanent damage to teeth and jaw joint and to eliminate pain. "Night guards", which are applied by a specialist physician and used between the lower and upper jaw teeth in order to prevent the contact of the teeth with each other during sleep, are a tool used in the symptomatic treatment of teeth grinding. However, night guards may not be sufficient alone. These treatments are; stress therapy, measures to provide comfortable sleep, muscle relaxant drug application, restoration of incorrectly made dental fillings and veneers, replacement of missing teeth prosthesis applications.
