Early diagnosis saves lives in prostate cancer
Urology Specialist Assoc. Dr. Şevket Tolga Tombul pointed out that many patients avoid consulting a urologist because of the examination performed during prostate screening. Assoc. Dr. Stating that prostate cancer does not always give symptoms, Tombul said, “If the diagnosis is made late, the disease may skip stages and become more difficult to treat. Therefore, routine control is very important.”
Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men after lung cancer. Urology Specialist Assoc. Dr. Şevket Tolga Tombul said that although there are no symptoms, a person may have prostate cancer. Assoc. Dr. Tombul said, “In men, the prostate tissue grows slowly with the effect of the male hormone. As its physical size increases, it causes urinary problems.” Reminding that today, most patients consult a doctor when these urinary problems occur, Assoc. Dr. Tombul said, “We say that prostate cancer does not always show symptoms, it can be diagnosed not only with urinary symptoms, but also with elevated PSA levels or stiffness to be detected in prostate examination, without any symptoms. For this reason, we recommend such urological controls after the age of 45 in patients with no symptoms, especially in people with a family risk of prostate cancer or with a familial history of breast and ovarian cancer, and after the age of 50 in patients who do not have any symptoms.
"THEY DON'T AFFORD THE EXAMINATION AND CONSULT THE PHYSICIAN"
Noting that the biggest obstacle for patients to apply to the physician is the "examination during prostate screening", Assoc. Dr. Tombul said, “Due to the finger examination, examination is avoided. However, our patients should not be afraid of this. As a result of these avoidances, the disease may skip stages and become more difficult to treat.” N"
Expressing that citizens should continue their routine check-ups even if prostate cancer does not show up as a result of the tests, Associate Professor Dr. Tombul said, “We normally perform our screenings with PSA blood test and rectal finger examination. When we detect a suspicious situation in these, we investigate whether there is a suspected cancer lesion in the prostate with the prostate MRI that will be taken of our patients. >
While we continue our follow-up with routine examinations when prostate cancer does not occur, we can apply surgery, radiotherapy, hormonal or chemotherapy treatments when prostate cancer occurs, depending on the stage of the disease. When we are diagnosed at an early stage, we can perform the treatment with surgery or radiotherapy. We can perform it with one of the open, laparoscopic or laparoscopy-assisted robotic surgery methods,” he said. Underlining Assoc. Dr. Tombul continued his words as follows:
“However, when the diagnosis is delayed, patients sometimes experience complaints that may occur due to pathological bone fractures, inability to urinate, bleeding in their urine, or splashing to other places. In this case, the treatments reach very different dimensions. In addition to hormonal treatments, radiotherapy and chemotherapy may be required. When the patient is late in the diagnosis during this process, he has to deal with the complications caused by the spread. No need to wait for it to show symptoms. Having a doctor's control without hesitation can play a very important role in the early diagnosis of prostate cancer.”
