Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases in society. It has been determined that 50-90% of asthma patients have reflux. This is because asthma relaxes the muscles surrounding the head of the stomach. In this case, it becomes easier for the acidic content in the stomach to escape into the esophagus. In the presence of reflux, the acidic content in the stomach escapes up the esophagus and into the trachea. Leakage of acidic stomach contents into the trachea and airways sometimes causes cough and sometimes narrowing-spasm in the airways, which triggers asthma attacks.
There is a significant relationship between reflux and asthma. For this reason, asthma patients should pay attention to their diet and eat small portions, little and often. They should stay away from fatty, spicy, acidic foods and cocoa desserts. Especially meals eaten late at night, just before going to bed, often cause reflux.
Due to fasting during Ramadan, people eat more than usual at iftar in the evening because they stay hungry all day long. This causes reflux development; Therefore, it causes asthma exacerbation. Eating at sahur and going to bed again is also a cause of reflux.
An effect of fasting on asthma patients is that their phlegm thickens due to prolonged thirst. The best expectorant for everyone is water, which is seriously important for asthma sufferers; Because asthma patients produce dark, sticky phlegm due to their disease, and when they drink plenty of water, this phlegm softens and is easily coughed out, preventing them from clogging. Asthma patients who remain dehydrated all day during fasting have difficulty expelling this thick phlegm and their asthma-related complaints may increase. The body needs to be protected from dehydration, especially in these summer months when air temperatures are very high. In addition, symptoms of the disease may increase when the medications that asthma patients under medication are required to use morning and evening are interrupted.
In summary, as in all chronic patients, fasting is not recommended for very severe asthma patients, elderly and asthmatic patients. Other asthma patients should also pay attention to the following while fasting:
No matter how hungry they are at iftar, they should not eat too much at once, eat slowly at intervals and choose light meals.
·Two hours before bedtime. They should stop eating 1 hour before.
They should drink plenty of water at iftar and sahur.
·They should not go to bed immediately after eating at sahur, they should move to a lying position after two hours.
·Medicine. Their hours should be rearranged under the supervision of a doctor
