Low moisture content of the skin is the primary factor in terms of dry skin. After this situation was first put forward by Blank in the 1950s; Studies on moisturizing the skin have gained importance.
In the last 50-60 years, many scientists have carried out studies on moisturizing the skin and tried to solve the unknowns.
Moisturizing the skin and preserving its moisture and water also delays the aging of the skin. Aging of the skin is proportional to the water retention capacity of the skin. As skin ages, its water retention capacity decreases.
Nowadays, it is known that the moisturizing of the stratum corneum layer can be increased with occlusives (concealer) and humectants (water retainer)and the coarsened skin surface can be softened with emollients.
Frequently used moisturizers:
Those that are oil-in-water emulsions (e.g. creams and lotions)
and water-in-oil hand creams. Their main ingredients are of two types.
- occlusives
- humectants
A good moisturizer combines both. should contain..
OCCLUSIVES (covering)
They are agents that reduce trans-epidermal water loss (TSEK) by covering and sealing the stratum corneum. For this reason, they are oily substances that prevent water from passing through, are generally soluble in oil and are widely used in skin care cosmetics. One of the best options for treating skin dryness is occlusives.
The most effective of these are solid and liquid petroleum jelly. Others ; paraffin, squalene, dimethicone, soybean oil, grape seed oil, propylene glycol, Lanolin and beeswax.
All these products are effective in reducing TSEK only when they are found in the skin. When they are cleaned from the skin, TSEK returns to normal level.
