"I was turning from one side to the other in bed... I was bending over to tie my shoes... I was hanging curtains... I was bending over a shelf in the grocery store... SUDDENLY THE WHOLE WORLD STARTED TO SPIN."
If you are experiencing at least one of these complaints, this may mean that you are facing a headache problem caused by inner ear crystals.
Ear Nose Throat Head and Neck Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Erkan Tarhan gave information about "Diagnosis and treatment of dizziness caused by inner ear crystals".
You feel like the whole world has collapsed around you.
Benign Positional Paroxysmal Vertigo (BPPV), commonly known as the dislocation of inner ear crystals, is a dizziness that begins suddenly with the position of the head, lasts for a short time, and makes you feel like the whole world is falling on your head. BPPV takes its name from its characteristics such as being able to resolve spontaneously after a while (benign), occurring with short-term attacks (paroxysmal), and occurring with certain positions of the head (positional).
The most common cause of dizziness
The movement of inner ear crystals constitutes 30% of all dizziness and is the most common of all dizziness. Although it is such a common disease that affects all age groups, unfortunately it is still not well-known in our country and unnecessary treatments are given to patients.
Nausea and vomiting may also accompany
Severe dizziness that starts suddenly and lasts for seconds; It is accompanied by complaints such as rapid eye movements, nausea, vomiting, palpitations and sweating. Undoubtedly, those who experience this disease make this definition much more colorful and noisy. Our patients describe the attacks as follows: “I was turning from one side to the other in bed, I was bending over to tie my shoes, I was hanging curtains, I was bending over a shelf in the market, when suddenly the whole world around me started spinning. This rotation was so violent that; I became unable to recognize anything around me. Dizziness was accompanied by nausea and vomiting. “The only good thing about this attack was that it lasted a short time.” This description is indeed very typical of BPPV. Attacks last only seconds. It is not expected to exceed minutes.
The inner ear crystals are displaced and It disrupts the balance system.
As it is known, the inner ear is our balance organ. There are very small sand-like particles in the channels here that cannot be seen with the naked eye. For many reasons such as stroke, long journeys, previous upper respiratory tract infections, these crystals move out of place and stimulate the balance system. In some of our patient's head movements; These crystals will shift and a dizzy attack will be inevitable.
Consult an ENT specialist as soon as complaints appear for correct diagnosis and treatment.
The diagnosis is specific to the patient's head. It is sufficient to position the eyes and observe their eye movements. This maneuver can also be recorded with some devices. The treatment is to replace these displaced particles with certain head movements. There is no need for drug treatment. Our only recommendation to our patient is some movement restrictions for 3 days. We are getting very satisfactory results in our patient, who will be checked again after 3 days.
