Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in Children

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy says that the problems people have are largely related to the distortion of reality due to false beliefs. In other words, the problems that bother people are related to how people evaluate the events they experience. The important point here is that mental problems are not the only cause of events, the way we perceive them and the way we evaluate events have a lasting effect on our problems. Cognitive behavioral therapy focuses on the problems that the client is currently experiencing and aims to change their dysfunctional thoughts and behaviors. Cognitive Behavioral therapy is a "present focused" psychotherapy. Treatment is based on cognitive formulation, behavioral pathways, and beliefs. Thoughts are made more realistic and in this way, emotional and behavioral disorders can be eliminated.

Cognitive behavioral therapy in children begins with emotion education. The aim here is to separate the emotions from each other; To teach to describe dominant emotions, situations, objects and events, to rate emotions and to notice bodily symptoms. Then with the help of deep breathing and relaxation exercises, heart palpitations, sweating, stomachache etc. It is aimed to develop the skills of coping with physical symptoms. Then, to notice the unrealistic and unhelpful thoughts that reveal the dominant emotion, to see the exaggerated sides of the thoughts by questioning them, to find encouraging thoughts to replace these unrealistic thoughts, to produce solutions for social problems that scare or worry him, to be proud of his efforts and achievements and learns to be self-confident. All of these studies are revised and studied in separate sessions in accordance with the age and developmental level of the children. After the dysfunctional thoughts are studied and replaced by more realistic thoughts, behavioral studies begin. Here, family psychoeducation is intensified because children need courage and support for emotion regulation when performing difficult behaviors from easy to difficult. Described as the most difficult After the first step has been taken, sessions with reduced frequency to prevent recurrence are planned and it means that it is time to say goodbye.
