Negative Effects of Technological Devices on Children

Today, technological devices take up a lot of space in human life. When we say technological devices, we think of devices such as phones, televisions, computers and tablets. The impact of these devices on children's development is an important issue.

The development of children in the preschool period is very rapid and in many respects this period is of critical importance for children. During this critical period, the time the child spends with technological devices can leave undesirable traces on their physical, emotional and social development. While children need to touch, feel, explore, experience and be in a mutual relationship with their parents during this period, they are deprived of these during the time they spend with devices such as phones, tablets and computers, and this has a negative impact on children's language development, social skills, attention span and learning skills. Exposure of children to technological devices at this age may harm their neurological development and may cause them to have possible attention problems in later ages. However, it prevents them from communicating and hinders their ability to socialize. Children who are exposed to these devices for a long time show interest in technological devices; They do not show interest in the toys their peers play with and make limited eye contact with the people around them.

The use of similar technological devices such as mobile phones and tablets in children between the ages of 0-3 has a disruptive effect on children's social relationships and delays their speech. They make more limited eye contact with people and, accordingly, the development of their social relationships is negatively affected. For this reason, children under the age of 3 should never be given tablets or mobile phones. At the age of 3 and beyond, it increases their anger outbursts, inability to control their anger, and some obsessive behaviors. It increases the attacks of trying to get what you want, and can cause sleep disorders, posture disorders, deterioration of muscle development, and eating disorders and obesity as it increases swallowing in later ages. He knows. Technological devices should never be given to children while eating, especially as a reward or to get the child to eat. In primary school age, it causes them to have problems concentrating attention, maintaining attention, and finishing what they start. This situation causes a decrease in academic success.

Long-term use of technological devices also causes physical problems. Observing musculoskeletal system disorders and experiencing tension and stiffness in the body are common situations. Eye fatigue, eye pain or soreness, dryness and similar discomforts may occur. Apart from this, the radiation waves emitted from these devices affect children much more seriously than adults. Considering these aspects, it is not right for children to spend time with these devices in the first years of life and children should be kept away from these devices. In later years, it should be limited to parental supervision. The person who has the say on this issue should be the parent, and parents should be clear and consistent with their children and draw boundaries on this issue.

Children should play games instead of spending time with technological devices, because games help the child to better know, discover and learn about himself and then the people and objects around him; It contributes to the child's cognitive, emotional and physical development. Considering this, parents should direct their children to games and activities that will contribute to their development, rather than allowing them to spend time with technological devices.
