Earache

Earache is a complex issue. While it may have a simple cause, life-threatening problems may also occur. Therefore, examination by an Ear Nose and Throat physician prevents incorrect treatment and unnecessary interventions. We can categorize the causes of earache in two groups.

A) EAR-RELATED CAUSES

1)Ear infections: The first of these is called swimmer's ear. Inflammation of the outer ear canal (external otitis) occurs. Unhygienic environments in places such as pools, seas, spas, etc. prepare the ground for external ear canal infection. It is common in people who poke and scratch the inside of the ear a lot. It may also be accompanied by a fungal infection accompanied by ear itching.

The treatment is based on the stage of the infection. Local treatment is performed. Treatment takes a few days, and this process is painful. Another cause of pain is middle ear infection. It is more common in children after upper respiratory tract infections. There is pain that usually lasts for a night and makes the child cry. Feeding young children lying down and especially with a bottle is also a reason. Appropriate medications (antibiotics, nasal drops, decongestants) are given for treatment.

If middle ear infection has become chronic, the eardrum is perforated and discharged. This inflammatory discharge also causes pain in the ear. It is mostly seen in adults.

The treatment is surgery. A viral infection that affects the eardrum, called myringitis, also causes pain. Viral diseases that cause facial paralysis can also cause painful fluid-filled vesicles in and around the ear canal.

Apart from these, diseases such as influenza, measles, and rubella caused by viruses can cause earache.

2)Ear traumas are another cause of pain. Among the blows to the ear, causes such as hitting or impact are common. In addition, reasons such as pressure trauma (altitude changes, underwater), freezing, burning may also cause pain.

3)Eustachian tube problems are the most common among these, eustachian tube function. disorder. A closed eustachian tube for various reasons can cause earache.

4)Earwax can absorb water and swell, especially after bathing, causing pain.

5)Sounds good Penetrating foreign bodies.

B) Extra-Aural Causes (Reflected Pains)
Although there is no pathological condition in the ear in this type of pain, there is a problem elsewhere due to common sensory nerves. It may occur as pain. Actually, there is no problem with the ear.

1)Throat and neck infections. Earache is most commonly caused by tonsillitis and pharyngitis. Neck, pharynx, esophagus and larynx infections also have the same effect.

2)Cancers and cancers of the throat and neck organs (mentioned above).

3)Jaw joint diseases

4)Sinusitis and facial infections, cancers.
