How do we sleep?

Sleep Stages

Sleep accounts for approximately one third of human lifespan. There are two main stages of sleep

: Non-REM (N-REM) and REM stage. REM sleep is called active sleep, the sleep stage in which we dream

. The N-REM stage is divided into 3 stages (N1, N2 and N3

stages).

N1 Stage: It is the stage of transition from wakefulness to sleep. This phase in which theta waves appear

is also called slumber. Breathing slows, heart rate slows, and

slow movements of the eyes are exhibited. At this stage, breathing is slow and regular, the heart rate is decreased, and the eyes show slow rotational movements. Since it is the first stage of the transition to sleep

complete relaxation in muscle tone and complete detachment from the state of consciousness is not yet seen.

Another feature seen in this stage is the condition called "Falling Feeling - Hypnic Leaping" .

This condition, which is described as muscle twitching, creates the feeling of "falling from somewhere by the mind

between dream and reality.

N2 Stage : Sleeping a little more This is the stage where it starts to deepen. Eye movements are interrupted and

muscular relaxation is observed. This stage, in which sleep spindles and K-Complexes are seen, allows us to sleep more comfortably by preventing perceptions about the outside world.

N3-4 Stage: Although it is the stage where the deepest sleep is seen, this stage The person awakened in this phase

may feel numbness in his body. In this phase where delta waves are seen, there is a disconnection from the outside world with slow wave sleep. Parasomnias (concomitant to sleep

situations: sleepwalking, talking during sleep, etc.) are experienced in this stage.

REM Stage: It is also called rapid eye movement stage. Approximately

90 minutes after the N-REM phase, the transition to the REM phase occurs. Although most of the dreams are seen at this stage

, the tone of the skeletal muscles is lost at this stage, except for the eye and respiratory muscles. The recall rate of dreams in the REM period is quite high.

Sleep Duration

Age, gender, diet, physical activity, health status, environmental environment, genetic background

and individual characteristics sleep can be considered as the reasons that determine the duration. Adults

Sleep time can vary between 4 and 11 hours. Sleeping 20-22 hours in babies,

10-12 hours in children, 6-8 hours in adults, 5-6 hours in people aged 60 and over is considered normal

. (Uzunkulaoglu, 2013).

Fear of Falling While Sleeping

Carl Jung, Owner of Analytical Psychology Theory, With the concept of the Collective Unconscious,

common unconscious object inherited from our ancestors

a common psychic identity or a common unconscious object inherited through genes< He claimed that /p>

. The common unconscious in the spiritual identity of man consists of traces covering the past of all people

. These traces appear especially in our dreams. (from Fordham,

2011: 27 cited by SUNAL KIZIL, 2015). In this direction, we can say that the source of the fear of falling while sleeping, which was passed down to us through the genes as the common heritage of our ancestors, is based on the past

.
