The Importance of Being Fast Before Surgery
Patients who will be given anesthesia should have an empty stomach. While the patient is under anesthesia, the foods in the full stomach and acidic gastric fluid may come back from the esophagus and escape into the trachea, which is undesirable and may cause life-threatening.
Adult patients should not take any food at least 6-8 hours before the surgery. . Clear liquids such as water, tea, and linden can be taken 2 hours before the operation, not exceeding one glass. Milk carbonated drinks and soup should be avoided. Regularly used medications can be taken with half a glass of water up to one hour before the surgery, in consultation with the doctor.
