Why do gums bleed?

There is a wide range of diseases that cause gingival bleeding, from simple gingivitis (1st stage of gum infection) to leukemia.

99% of gingival bleeding is caused by gum disorders caused by poor oral hygiene, and the rest is caused by gum disease. Medicines that cause dry mouth cause systemic diseases such as diabetes. Gum bleeding can be completely prevented by applying correct tooth brushing techniques and gum treatments. The first cause of bleeding gums is dental stones. Dental tartar thickens over time as the minerals secreted by saliva adhere to food residues (dental plaque and food deposits that we cannot see) on poorly cleaned teeth and gum tissues, and inflammation begins with the accumulation of microorganisms on it; gums begin to redden, swell and bleed. Therefore, there is no chance of correcting gum bleeding without cleaning the tartar. A good cleaning followed by proper brushing, flossing and sometimes an interdental brush may be required for the patient. Sometimes, only detertraj (dental stone cleaning process) is not enough, and if the infection has reached the bone tissue, the tooth root surfaces must be arranged by curettage and the retaining areas must be scraped.

During pregnancy, some people may experience enlargement and bleeding in the gums. The reason for this is hormonal. However, if there is tartar, it must be cleaned.

One of the oral symptoms of leukemia is very enlarged, bleeding and painful gums.

In people who smoke, the gums do not bleed easily because the blood circulation is impaired, but this does not mean that there is a problem. There is no gum disease. There is definitely some stage of gum disease in a mouth with tartar, and it should not be ignored.

If our gums are bleeding, it is useful to understand this: Ignoring this problem will prevent many diseases from being caught at an early stage. If treatment is delayed, we lose most of our healthy tissues. This means that even if your teeth are healthy in the long term, we may lose them because the surrounding tissues melt. Therefore, bleeding gums are a warning and should be taken into consideration.
