Spinal stenosis is the narrowing of the canal through which the spinal cord passes. Thus, compression occurs in the spinal cord and nerves and symptoms occur as a result. Spinal stenosis is a disease seen mostly in the older age group. As the spine ages, the spinal canal narrows as a result of thickening in the ligaments and facet joints, calcification, and bulging of the disc. There are rarely people whose spinal canal is congenitally narrow. In these people, stenosis symptoms may be seen at a later age. It is a disease most commonly seen in the waist and then the neck, and rarely in the back area. The probability of being seen in both the waist and neck at the same time is 30%.
