While many of my clients are receiving cortisone treatment; He is worried about the problems he will experience in the future and sometimes the risks.
Cortisone, a hormone, is used for the treatment of many diseases; corticosteroidsi.e. cortisone, prednisone, dexamethasone, etc. They are a group of drugs with a steroid structure. These types of drugs are similar to the cortisone hormone secreted by the adrenal glands.
Nutrition should not always be focused on weight loss. Nutrition is always important, sometimes to minimize the effect of the drugs you use and sometimes to avoid food-drug interactions.
So What is the Effect of Cortisone?
Corticosteroid group drugs. It has an opposite effect to insulin. Therefore, while the increase in glycogenesis increases glycogen production and storage in the liver; It prevents protein synthesis in cells outside the liver. Therefore, at this point, individuals who train should pay attention to muscle breakdown. So, if you ask, should we eat protein-based? At this point, I should point out that it may increase the formation of urea and ammonia and cause nitrogen loss in the urine.
Attention to Increased Appetite… While cortisone affects the distribution of fats in the body, it increases lipolysis. For this reason, fluctuations in blood sugar and high doses of insulin have a lipogenic effect by increasing appetite.
Effects the Nervous System… These types of drugs have negative effects on the central nervous system. Therefore; Situations such as behavioral changes, depression, insomnia and increased appetite may be encountered.
The Real Problem; Edema and Fluid Balance….Unfortunately, cortisone treatment can cause damage mostly to the kidneys. Because it increases sodium (Na) and water absorption by activating aldosterone receptors; It causes loss of potassium and hydrogen. This situation affects the fluid-electrolyte balance throughout the process. Because in cortisol deficiency, the capacity to excrete water from the kidneys decreases and Ca and uric acid excretion increases. At all these points, sensitivity should be paid to possible cardiovascular disorders.
Does it cause osteoporosis?
Cortisone group drugs, It reduces the absorption of calcium from the intestine and increases its excretion from the kidneys. They cause a secondary increase in the release of parathyroid hormone (PTH). In addition, phosphaturia occurs by reducing the reabsorption of phosphates from the renal tubules. In short, they increase bone destruction by reducing the effectiveness of bone formation.
Why is Salt Consumption Restricted While Using Cortisone?
Excessive salt consumption in the diet while using cortisone increases calcium excretion from the kidney and reduces absorption. That is, Na absorption and Ca absorption affect each other.
So What Should We Pay Attention to in Nutrition?
Get support from calcium!
Long-term and high doses As a result of cortisone treatment, bone destruction increases and osteoporosis may occur. The reason for this is that the level of estrogen decreases and the reabsorption of calcium from the intestine decreases. To balance this process, you can add calcium-rich foods to your diet. In addition to dairy products such as milk, yoghurt and cheese, green leafy vegetables, soybeans and legumes are rich in calcium. But I must point out that when consuming dairy products, you should especially consume them without salt.
Potassium should not be forgotten!
Sodium restriction is the primary starting point in nutrition in patients using cortisone. However, potassium intake should be increased. Because cortisone can increase sodium reabsorption in the kidney, causing hypertension. In these cases, it is likely to cause muscle weakness because it affects potassium excretion. Therefore, it would be beneficial to increase the consumption of vegetables and fruits rich in potassium. Sweet potatoes, bananas, yoghurt, avocados, spinach, mushrooms, broccoli and figs are examples of foods rich in potassium.
Not Just Table Salt!
Sodium restriction is the most sensitive issue we all know, but what we need to pay attention to here is basically salt restriction, as well as foods with high sodium content such as packaged foods, processed meats, pickles, pickles, canned foods and sauces.
In addition to all this, consuming plenty of water, exercising regularly and planning a diet based on the medication you use will help you get a healthier response to the treatment; s It will make the scar healthier.
