What Causes Muscle Pain? How does it work?

Muscles are the main structure in our body that provides movement. There are special muscle groups that provide every movement. Muscle pain is sometimes felt in these special groups and sometimes in the whole body. This pain is usually aching or burning and can spread to other areas.

What are the Causes of Muscle Pain?

Other diseases in which muscle pain is a prominent finding are myofascial pain syndrome polymyalgiaaromatica, myopathies and deficiencies of some vitamins such as vitamin D and some minerals such as magnesium. Iron deficiency anemia and thyroid disorders can also cause muscle pain.

As the cause of widespread pain may be rheumatic diseases such as fibromyalgia and myofascial pain syndrome, polymyalgiaaromatica or vitamin deficiencies, necessary tests should be performed after a good examination in such pains. should determine the time of onset of pain and whether it is associated with any trauma. Traumas can be a major trauma such as a blow to the muscle or a fall, as well as unit traumas caused by the accumulation of repetitive small movements, which we call micro-trauma. When a relationship is established with such a trauma, the patient can be followed up with muscle rest and cold application first. What are the Treatment Applications?

Before physical therapy applications, it is necessary to know the cause of the pain and to determine if there is an underlying systemic disease.
After the differential diagnosis is made, the treatment is planned according to the diagnosis of the patient. For example, in myofascial pain syndrome, which is one of the common causes of muscle pain, the patient's complaint is mostly in one muscle group. This muscle group is usually neck and back muscles. In addition to this, stiffness and shortness have developed.
In the treatment, pain reduction is aimed with the applications for these stiffness, which are detected in the examination, and the causes such as postural disorders that cause this pain should be found and corrected. Superficial and deep heat applications, electric currents, massage, stretching exercises are applied to dissolve the painful bands in the muscles.
In cases where results are not obtained or the patient does not have time to spare for physical therapy, applications such as local injection, dry needling or ESWT can be performed. Simultaneously with these applications, the patient is given ergonomics training and if there is a posture disorder, exercise training is given in the clinic or as home exercise.
The treatment is different in fibromyalgia syndrome, which is another condition characterized by widespread muscle pain. Since the condition that causes fibromyalgia is usually a disorder in the body's pain mechanisms, drugs that provide pain modulation, exercise and, when necessary, relaxation training and behavioral treatments are used.

What are Physiotherapy Applications in Regional Muscle Pain?

Although treatment is planned according to the location of the pain in regional muscle pain, cold application, analgesic currents, muscle-strengthening currents and exercises, and deep sensory enhancing exercises are generally used together with anti-rheumatic drugs.
