Take Care of Our Skin as We Enter the Winter Months

Since our skin is the largest organ of our body, it is our skin that suffers the first and most damage from external factors. These days, when we start to feel the winter season in our bones, difficult days have begun for our skin, hair and nails.Dermatology Specialist Dr. Oğuz Küçükçakır gave information about the subject.

The most important factors affecting the skin in winter months are cold weather, dry air, indoor environments heated by air conditioners and heaters, environmental pollution, thick, woolen, synthetic clothes and poor skin cleansing. (bathing, washing) is done less frequently than in the summer months. For these reasons, our skin begins to dry during this period, and cracked lips, itchy elbows and the T-zone (the area covering the sides of your nose and eyebrows and just above) are the symptoms of this. Apart from our face, the other thing that dries most frequently is Our areas are our arms, legs, hands and feet. Thin vertical lines on dry nails, layer separation and breakage at the nail tips are the most common nail complaints. Drying of the scalp can manifest itself in the form of dandruff, frizz, coarseness and dullness in the hair strands.

So how can we avoid these harmful effects?

The most important point is to support the lipid (oil) layer of the skin. Since our skin type changes (for example, oily skin becomes less oily in the cold, normal skin becomes dry, dry skin becomes painfully sensitive), the skin care products used in winter skin care should be different from the skin care products used in summer. Antibacterial and deodorant soaps used while cleaning the skin may cause more harm than good by stripping the skin's protective oil layer. For this reason, creamy and moisturizing mild soaps or shower gels containing oil-containing bath oils/moisturizers such as glycerin, lanolin and the like should be used. Oily creams for very dry skin on the face and body; For oily and acne-prone skin, water-based creams should be preferred. Since legs and arms are areas that tend to dry out, oily creams should be preferred in these areas. Moisturizing creams generally contain glycerin, petroleum jelly, urea, lactic acid and hyaluronic acid, depending on preference. These moisturizers prevent dryness It should be applied to damp skin frequently and preferably after bathing in cold weather. If you have oily skin and just want to moisturize your skin without making it more oily, you can turn to "non-comodogenic" products. These products do not clog the pores on your skin.

It is ideal to wash your hair 2-3 times a week during the winter months. Stay in the bathroom should not exceed 15 minutes. Washing with very hot water should be avoided. It may be useful to choose shampoos containing zinc pyritone or selenium sulfide. Using care oils containing vitamin E, olive oil or argan oil on the scalp for 1-2 hours before bathing will ensure softness and shine in the hair.

There are no sebaceous glands in our lips, so the lips dry and crack more than the rest of the skin. Therefore, avoiding licking the lips, covering the lips with a scarf or scarf on cold and windy days, using a lip protective cream or lip balm with a factor of 15 or higher and increasing the humidity of the environment are indispensable precautions for our lips.

UV rays that cause skin aging, blemishes and skin cancers continue to reach our world, and especially on snowy days, we are exposed to much more UV rays due to the rays reflected from the snow. Just like in summer, we should regularly use sunscreens with UVA-B filters and at least 30 SPF in winter.

In cold weather, hand creams containing glycerin, petroleum jelly and lanolin should be applied more frequently, hand soaps should be creamy or oily, and gloves should be used.

Hand creams are not sufficient to protect nails. Therefore, care should be taken to use nail protective creams regularly.

Creams and pomades containing salicylic acid and urea should be applied regularly to the feet that stay in thick socks, boots and boots for a long time during winter days.

In order to protect the skin from the aging effects of cold and dry weather, retinoic acid, glycolic acid, ascorbic acid and peptides should be applied in the form of creams, serums and masks; systemically antioxidant etc. The necessary substances should be taken in capsule or tablet forms.

V The best time to do cut and face peeling is the winter months. In order to have healthy and beautiful skin, it is necessary to first remove dead cells. In winter, the renewal of the dead layer of the skin should be ensured with gels, creams or masks containing glycolic acid, retinoic acid or salicylic acid, the frequency of which should be adjusted according to the skin type.

Omega-3 support will increase the effect of skin care in winter. Grain foods, along with winter fruits and vegetables, are among the healthy eating rules to make skin care more effective in winter.
