Eye Redness

The reason for the redness of the eye is that the blood vessels in the conjunctiva layer are excessively dilated. The conjunctiva layer is the thin membranous layer over the white part of the eye. Although it normally carries many blood vessels, the vessels are not visible because the vessels are very thin and the layer appears whitish. However, when the veins become more visible for any reason, they turn red.

The most common cause of red eye disease is infections. In infections caused by bacteria, additional secretion occurs and the patient develops bruising. It is the most innocent of the diseases.

Infections caused by viral factors are the diseases that cause the reddest and even bleeding foci. It is very contagious. It may be long-lasting and cause corneal involvement.

Corneal ulcer, one of the diseases of the corneal layer of the eye, is a very important disease that creates spots in the eye and causes a decrease in vision.

It is especially associated with allergic conjunctivitis. After scratching the eyes, there are obvious bloodshot areas.

Eye traumas are another cause of red eyes. Trauma-related bleeding in the eye conjunctiva may occur due to tearing. It may require treatment with surgery.

The cause of red eye, which is spontaneous and usually the patient is not aware of it and is warned by those around him, is called subconjunctival hemorrhage. It usually occurs due to hypertension. It is a warning for patients. It occurs due to strain on the body.

Another important cause of red eye is uveitis. Uveitis is an immune system disease that can cause significant vision loss in the eye. It causes a different type of red eye disease, which we call ciliary injection, and is accompanied by decreased vision.

Apart from these, many different diseases such as glaucoma, that is, eye pressure, and dry eye can cause red eyes.

The treatment of each disease is different, the treatment given for one disease may be harmful for another disease.

For this reason, when our patients talk about their red eye symptoms by phone or e-mail, making a diagnosis without examination may be incorrect or incomplete. Giving treatment without examining in this way is not true. For all these reasons, if we have red eye disease, we recommend that they be examined by an ophthalmologist as soon as possible.
