Muscle tears around the shoulder are a common problem in orthopedics. The muscle group surrounding the shoulder, called the rotator cuff, can be torn after a severe fall or trauma in young patients, and due to wear and tear in elderly patients.
What are the symptoms of shoulder muscle (rotator cuff) tears?
The most important symptom of muscle tears around the shoulder is pain. The pain usually starts from the outer side of the shoulder and continues to the middle of the arm and usually occurs when raising your arm. In the early period, there is no significant pain when the arm is next to the trunk. The pain that occurs when trying to pick up a box from the high shelf is typical. Another finding is the loss of strength and weakness that occur during raising the arm sideways-up. This loss of strength may be due to pain or the inability of the muscle to perform its task.
Treatment of muscle (rotator cuff) tears around the shoulder
In the treatment, when the physician deems it necessary, single-dose cortisone injections to the shoulder can relieve pain. Surgical treatment is performed in patients whose pain persists despite medication, cortisone injection and physical therapy. Arthroscopic treatment is the gold standard in surgical treatment. Depending on the type of tear, cleaning the fringed area and shaving the bone protrusions that cause compression can be performed, as well as making the tear a full layer and repair is also possible.
