Centuries ago (14th century), was the famous philosopher, statesman and economist Ibn Khaldun really right when he said, "In times of famine, it is not hunger that kills people, but the satiety they are accustomed to"?
Actually, he took the first street to the first street. We can say that the situation we experienced during the curfew is the clearest indicator of this. Were we really hungry at that moment? Even though it has psychological and sociological reasons, I will examine this situation through nutrition science and psychology.
Hunger is a natural phenomenon that is normally manifested by the rumbling of our stomach and low blood sugar. So it is not a disease.
Imagine working 6 days a week and waking up to a beautiful Sunday morning. Why do you easily consume cheese and eggs, which you put into your mouth with great difficulty and difficulty every day on your way to work, on a Sunday, perhaps with dozens of varieties? Or you are quarantined at home and fasting. You have had iftar. Afterwards, a dessert is a must. You have consumed the dessert, 1-2 hours have passed. A snack plate also came from there. In front of you is your favorite TV series or your favorite movie on Netflix. Again, with a huge appetite, as if you weren't the one who ate many kinds of food at that iftar 1-2 hours ago. The situation that occurs here is an emotional hunger.
Emotional hunger or emotional eating is a situation that can occur in almost everyone. If you eat on purpose and then experience serious regret, this may lead to a disorder. It is a very broad subject, so I will give some basic information and go into depth about real hunger and emotional hunger in my next articles.
Emotional hunger, anxiety, stress, unhappiness, loneliness, emptiness. It is the act of giving oneself to food even if one is not hungry in emotional situations such as anger, distress, etc.
There are many factors affecting emotional hunger, but it is still a complex situation that does not have a clear answer. In this article, I just wanted to raise awareness of our real hunger and emotional hunger. Because this awareness will bring us great benefits and will mean taking a step forward for people with weight problems.
Emotional hunger begins suddenly. Maybe when you're sitting alone, a sudden thought of chips or elephant comes to your mind. Like m and coke trio. Even if he is not at home at that moment, you will go and buy it for him from the nearest market. You bought it and set up your environment. At that moment, it is as if all the stress and troubles are gone and you are the most peaceful and happy person in the world. You can't ignore emotional hunger, you can't make it wait. Instead of the chips you were thinking of, maybe you drank water or ate vegetables to suppress that hunger, but to no avail. Because a voice in your head never stops saying "take it, eat it and be happy". Emotional hunger does not have a certain satiation level. Whenever your stomach gets tense or you get bored again, you can quit at that moment. Then, of course, comes great regret. You say it won't happen again, but after a stressful, troublesome day or when you're bored at home, suddenly it's running around in your head again. This is exactly what emotional hunger is. There are many types, but in this article, I wanted to start with the most visible one in order to raise awareness.
What about real hunger?
Now what I have just mentioned. Forget the situations and let's assume that if you are a healthy individual, you ate 4-5 hours ago. Slowly, your stomach has started to rumble and your blood sugar has already started to drop. The table is set and you have a meat and vegetable dish, yoghurt, salad and bread in front of you. You broke your bread quite normally and consumed other varieties as well. After 20-25 minutes, a voice said, "That's enough, you've had enough." You got up from the table and were able to convey to your brain that you were full. At that moment, while eating a normal meal at the table, you did not look for chips or chocolate. So normally, your body's signals detected hunger, you ate whatever was put in front of you at that moment and you were able to get up.
Even if the food wasn't ready at that moment, you could wait half an hour, right? Since you can wait 16 hours while fasting, yes you could. Real hunger can be delayed at the same time and does not come suddenly.
Salty, carbohydrate and fatty foods and drinks are preferred by people with emotional hunger. In real hunger, a plate of vegetable food is enough to fill you up.
Be simple, ask yourself this in the first place to analyze the situation you are in; If there were beans, salad and yoghurt in front of me right now, would he want to eat it? Or do I just want this?
There will be nothing more until you take the first steps. We will understand more in my next articles. Stay healthy and with your good feelings…
